Upping the superhero ante

"Iron Man," which premieres Friday in the US but today in Malaysia, not only kicks off Hollywood's extended summer movie season, it supercharges what is shaping up as the biggest season ever for comic book-to-film transfers.

"It's not a fad," Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige said of the onslaught of movies built around comic book avengers. "It's the new archetype for the summer blockbuster. Everybody loves special effects, everybody loves epic entertainment, and that's what comics have been delivering for decades and decades."

"Iron Man" will be followed by "The Incredible Hulk" and "Wanted" on June 13 and 27, respectively, both from Universal. "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" unleashes July 11, again from Universal, while "The Dark Knight," Warner Bros.' Batman sequel, alights July 18. Lionsgate releases "Punisher: War Zone" Sept. 12. On July 2, Sony opens its Will Smith-starrer "Hancock," which is not actually based on an actual comic but does promise to turn superhero conventions on their head with its tale of a depressed, alcoholic, bumbling hero.

It speaks to the vitality of the genre that Hollywood can schedule all these movies in the same time period without fear that they will cannibalize each another. "Iron Man" is a Marvel action movie featuring a man in a super-powered armor, while "Wanted" is an R-rated action movie about a society of super-assassins. "Hulk" is a Marvel monster movie set amid a realistic backdrop, while "Hellboy" aims to take audiences to underground worlds fertilized by Guillermo del Toro's imagination. "Dark Knight" is expected to offer another dark, psychological exploration from director Christopher Nolan.

"If they were all about a guy who runs into an alley and changed into a costume or into a phone booth to put on a mask, they would have come and gone in a year or two," Feige said. Maintaining a heroic diversity is important to Marvel as it gets ready to greenlight its next films from a slate that ranges from "Ant-Man" (directed by Edgar Wright) to "Thor" (a Norse God adventure from Matthew Vaughn) to the patriotic, flag-waving "Captain America."

"Because they can be so varied in genre, in rating, in execution, there is a lot of room for them (in the marketplace)," said Donna Langley, president of production at Universal Studios. "But you should be mindful about the competitive landscape. You obviously don't want to release 'Superman' and 'Spider-Man' the same day."

These movies are not slam dunks, by any means. The riskiest among the crop is the Marvel-backed "Hulk," which has seen a behind-the-scenes drama play out between star Ed Norton and Marvel over competing visions. There is also the hurdle of getting audiences to see a movie that is not a sequel but a relaunch of a film that came out only five years ago.

On the other hand, not all of these flicks are $100 million-plus gambles. Universal has been keen on keeping the budgets on "Hellboy 2" and "Wanted" in the $80 million range.

Says Langley: "It's like animated movies -- we went from two or three a year to 25 a year. Only so many of them are going to overperfrom, and the others are going to do OK."

As it ups the superhero ante, Hollywood is still learning is to be mindful of the characters' fan bases and creators. The comic book fans scrutinize everything from director and actors to costumes to how closely the films follow the source material. Creators, meanwhile, can spout off against any movie that they feel betrays their vision. Alan Moore, for example, never publicly blessed the movies "V for Vendetta" and "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," which were based on his comics.

In the summer, "Wanted" strays from its source material. The original miniseries was, in part, a nihilistic tale of evil super-assassins killing one another as well as the good guys. But because that comic's fan base isn't as big as that of Hellboy or Spider-Man, the studio felt comfortable veering from the comic to make it more appealing to a broader-based audience. But it also made sure creator Mark Millar was involved, going to him for ideas and using his dialogue for voice-over bits.

"If you deviate from the comic book, do it in concert with the creator so he doesn't wage an Internet campaign," Langley said.

While another ironic take on costumed heroes, 1999's "Mystery Men," fizzled at the boxoffice, times, audiences and movies have changed, making "Hancock" as close to a sure-bet as you can find at the boxoffice.

"As an audiencegoer, I cannot wait to see that movie," Langley said. "But it's because I've been conditioned by the past five to 10 years of comic book action movies."

"Every summer I get asked how long is this going to last," Feige said. "The truth is, that's like saying how long are people going to make movies based on novels. Well, for as long as there are cool stories to be told."By Borys Kit [Hollywood Reporter]

Paramount Unveils Blu-ray Launch Plans

The wait is over: Paramount has officially confirmed the details of its Blu-ray re-entry plans, with its first titles due for release late next month.Announced late today via press release , the studio will kick off their Blu-ray support on May 20, with the release of 'Face Off', 'NEXT' and 'Bee Movie'.

Paramount will follow that up on June 3 with the release of 'Cloverfield' and 'There Will Be Blood'. Then on June 24 we'll see the debut of 'The Spiderwick Chronicles'. which will launch day-and-date with the standard DVD.

"Paramount Home Entertainment continues to focus on the consumer and to explore avenues that allow fans to get more out of their home entertainment experience," said Kelley Avery, President of Worldwide Home Entertainment, Paramount Pictures. "We will have a strong slate of titles for Blu-ray release throughout the year worldwide and are enthusiastic about expanding the format's offerings for a broad consumer audience while delivering an experience that goes beyond what viewers love about DVD."

Full tech specs are not yet in for the newly-announced titles, though preliminary details in the press release indicate that the supplemental content on the Blu-ray versions will mirror the previously-released standard DVD and HD DVD versions.

Paramount's announcement follows weeks of anticipation among early adopters. The studio initially launched a format-agnostic approach to the format war in 2006, only to defect to HD DVD late last year in a widely publicized announcement. Following Toshiba's war-ending abandonment of the HD DVD format earlier this year, Paramount again switched allegiance to Blu-ray, though the studio had yet to issue details of its initial release plans. - Source from highdefdigest.com

Golden Compass & 27 Dresses On Blu-ray 29 April

The Golden Compass (Blu-ray)

New Line Home Entertainment / 2007 / 113 Minutes / Rated PG-13
Street Date: April 29, 2008

Overall Grade 4 out of 5 Fully loaded extras. Superb effects. Get it for your kids indeed.

Genres: Action adventure, family

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig
Director: Chris Weitz

Plot Synopsis: A fantasy epic with more than a passing resemblance to the Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia film franchises, The Golden Compass takes place in an alternate universe where each human's soul is embodied in a companion animal called a daemon. Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards), an orphan who's lived most of her life among the scholars at Oxford, is intrigued when her uncle, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), announces his plans to travel north to investigate the source of some mysterious particles called Dust. Lyra has little hope of following her uncle until a mysterious woman named Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman, at her most icily beautiful) asks Lyra to travel north as her personal assistant. All is not as it seems, however, and the disappearance of Lyra's friend Roger (Ben Walker) sets her on a dizzying adventure. She does have an alethiometer, or golden compass, that can help her see the truth, and a number of companions, including her shape-shifting daemon, Pantalaimion (voiced by Freddie Highmore of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), polar-bear warrior Iorek Byrnison (voiced by Ian McKellen), Texas aeronaut Lee Scoresby (Sam Elliott), and witch queen Serafina Pekkala (Craig's Casino Royale co-star, Eva Green). Even before its release, The Golden Compass was the subject of controversy over its perceived anti-religious themes. While it does involve an oppressive institution called the Magisterium, it's not overtly religious, particularly to a young viewer. The movie's PG-13 rating should be taken seriously, however. Suitable for an older audience than Narnia (though younger than The Lord of the Rings), it deals with complex concepts, violence (though largely bloodless) and implied death, children and animals in peril, and an unrelentingly ominous and unsettling mood. Despite a few changes and rearrangements, the overall plot of the movie is remarkably faithful to its source material, the first installment of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. It doesn't finish the book, however, and--much like The Fellowship of the Ring did--leaves the viewer hanging in anticipation of the next film, The Subtle Knife, due in 2009. So even though The Golden Compass is impressive--especially with its spot-on cast and terrific visual effects--we probably won't know its full emotional impact until the story is complete. [Amazon.com]

Disc Features:
Considering the movie's box office failure, New Line has thrown together an impressive batch of supplements for this 2-disc edition, all arranged thoughtfully in the menus and presented in High Definition video. Not the usual EPK fluff, the numerous featurettes cover all the nuts and bolts of making a big-budget feature film in a fair amount of depth.
  • Feature Audio Commentary by Writer/Director Chris Weitz – Weitz speaks intelligently about his intentions and choices, his love of the material, and the changes made for the adaptation. He's obviously a smart guy, and it's a shame that the movie didn't turn out as well as he thinks it did.
  • The Novel: Author Philip Pullman and the Consequences of Curiosity (HD, 20 min.) – In this part interview / part bio piece, the author discusses the origins of the story and his concept of making a modern version of 'Paradise Lost'. Disappointingly, there's a little too much fawning praise for the writer and no discussion at all of his anti-religious views.
  • The Adaptation of Writer/Director Chris Weitz (HD, 16 min.) – Recorded during pre-production for the movie, the director talks about his inspiration, how he was chosen for the job, and the incredible amount of pressure to not screw it up (whoops!). After seeing how the film overtook his life, I kind of feel bad for the guy.
  • Finding Lyra Belacqua: Introducing Dakota Blue Richards (HD, 15 min.) – We're given a look at the open casting auditions for the lead role, and the reasons Richards finally won out. The adorable young actress reveals that she did the Snoopy dance when notified that she'd gotten the job.
  • Daemons (HD, 20 min.) – Coverage of the concept, the visual effects, the choice and design of each animal, photography, puppeteering, and dialogue recording.
  • The Alethiometer: Creating the Truth Measure (HD, 15 min.) – The design and making of the prop, from casting the bronze to building the gears and applying the graphics.
  • Production Design: The Emotional Fabric of a Parallel World (HD, 26 min.) – Sets, props, vehicles, weapons, and the overall look and feel of the entire movie. The use of circles and ovals throughout the picture is analyzed.
  • Costumes (HD, 12 min.) – Designer Ruth Myers demonstrates how costumes inform the characters' personalities.
  • Oxford: Lyra's Jordan (HD, 8 min.) – Shooting on location to create the character's first home.
  • Armoured Bears: The Panserbjørne of Svalbard (HD, 18 min.) – The climactic bear-on-bear fight scene is introduced with some very amusing pre-vis animatics. Also shown are the creation of the CGI, the bear design and scale, and recording of the voices.
  • Music (HD, 12 min.) – Composer Alexandre Desplat and Executive Music Producer Paul Broucek showcase the various themes and ethnic elements in the score.
  • The Launch: Releasing the Film (HD, 8 min.) – Young Ms. Richards composes herself admirably during the intensive press coverage of the movie's premiere.
  • Trailers (HD, 7 min.) – Three trailers are provided, each with some small amount of footage not seen in the movie's final cut.
  • Image Galleries (HD) – Several extensive galleries contain production art and behind-the-scenes photographs relating to the Alethiometer, the armored bears, costumes, daemons, production design, and posters.

27 Dresses (Blu-ray)

Fox Home Entertainment / 2008 / 111 Minutes / Rated PG-13
Street Date: April 29, 2008

Genres: Romantic comedy

Starring: Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, Edward Burns
Director: Anne Fletcher

Plot Synopsis: Katherine Heigl (Knocked up, TV's Grey's Anatomy) lights up the screen in this charming romantic comedy from the screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada." Heigl stars as Jane, a romantic, completely selfless woman who has been a bridesmaid in no less than 27 weddings. Unfortunately her own happy ending seems to be nowhere in sight. Until her younger sister Tess captures the heart of Jane's boss -- on whom Jane has a secret crush inspiring Jane to change her "always-a-bridesmaid" destiny.

Disc Features:
The collection of supplements for '27 Dresses' is a largely a promotional package that continues the general mediocrity of this Blu-ray release. Don't expect much depth here (heck, there isn't even an audio commentary). Fox does present all of the extras in 1080 HD, and there are English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin and Korean subtitle options.
  • Featurette: "The Wedding Party" (HD, 15 minutes) - The first of four featurettes, all total EPK material. This standard making-of gives us gee-whiz interviews with Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, Judy Greer, Edward Burns, and director Anne Fletcher, plus the main crew. There's also tons of plot recap and film clips, making this another extended commercial for a movie you've already seen.

  • Featurette: "You'll Never Wear That Again" (HD, 7 minutes) - A visit with costume designer Catherine Marie Thomas, who had to come up with -- I'll give you one guess! -- 27 differently dresses for Heigl to wear.

  • Featurette: "The Running of the Brides" (HD, 5 minutes) - A brief, bizarre vignette on the retail chain Filene's Basement, which holds annual events where they put tons of wedding dresses on the racks at huge discounts. The way these women react gives new meaning to the term "Bridezillas."

  • Featurette: "Jane's World " (HD, 5 minutes) - A look at the film's production design, and turning Rhode Island into a believable New York City.

  • Deleted Scenes (SD, 4 minutes) - There are three clips here, each a legitimate cut scene featuring Heigl in a comedic situation, including having her cab stolen by another wedding-goer, and a subplot involving saving a dog from euthanasia.

  • Theatrical Trailers - Fox includes trailers for 'Juno' and 'Devil Wears Prada'.

Baby Mama Arrives at #1

LAST WEEKEND The females beat the males as Baby Mama beat Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay for the top spot at the box office in this, the final weekend before the summer movie season kicks off.

Former SNL Weekend Update co-anchors, and current BFF's, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's Baby Mama found its way to top of the charts this weekend, taking in an estimated $18.3M. The female buddy comedy about Poehler becoming a surrogate mother for Fey, averaged a strong $7,184 per screen for Universal.

Landing in second place was the male buddy comedy Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, which smoked up an estimated $14.5M this weekend, in one of the last releases for New Line Cinema. In 2004, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle opened with a disappointing $5.5M on its way to a $18.2M final gross. Its sequel, after 4 years of gaining a cult following, nearly hit that amount in its first weekend.

Third and fourth places went to last weekend's numbers one and two. In third was the battle of the martial arts experts, The Forbidden Kingdom. Falling 47.5% from last weekend, the Lionsgate film brought in $11.2M, according to estimates, bringing its total to $38.3. Look for a final gross in the $55M range. Fourth place went to another Universal comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which slipped 38% to $11M, according to estimates, bringing its cume to $35.1M. Look for a final gross in the same $55M range.

Fox and Sony controlled the rest of the top 10, with three titles each. In fifth place for a second consecutive weekend was the family adventure Nim's Island, which had the best hold in the top 10, dipping only 20% for an estimated $4.5M this weekend. Its cume now stands at $39M after four weeks.

Sony's triumverate of films landed in the six to eight spots. Leading off was the PG-13 horror film Prom Night, which fell 49% from last weekend to an estimated $4.4M, bringing its cume to $38.1M. In seventh was the surprisingly strong 21 which fell only 27.5% this weekend, taking in an additional $4M in chips, according to estimates. Its total now stands at a very solid $75.8M. Crashing and burning into eighth was 88 Minutes. The Al Pacino-led thriller fell 48% from last weekend's debut to an estimated $3.6M. Its total stands at $12.6M with not much more left in the bucket. Look for a final gross in the $15M range.

Spending a seventh week in the top 10, and landing at number nine was the Fox animted hit Horton Hears a Who, which took in $2.4M according to estimates, falling 31% from last weekend. Its cume now stands at a towering $147.9M. However its reign as the top grossing film of 2008 will come to an end very shortly. And rounding out the top ten was Fox stablemate Deception which landed with a thud and earned an estimated $2.1M this weekend, for a per theater average of a dismal $1,114. Look for a quick trip to the DVD aisles for this one.

The top ten films grossed $76.2M which was up 34% from last year when Disturbia took its third trip to number one with $9M; and down 11% from 2006 when RV debuted in the top spot with $16.4M.

In Theatres This Week 25th April

Another fascinating weekend ahead of us with more great releases. This time it's gonna be a comedy week as next week the summer blockbuster is kickin-off with the most anticipated "Iron Man".

Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo
Copyright © 2008 New Line Cinema

"Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo" marks the triumphant return of these two hilarious, slacker anti-heroes. The movie stars John Cho as Harold and Kal Penn as Kumar, two stoners who can't seem to get a break. Their last adventure found them traveling across country to find a White Castle hamburger in order to satisfy a weed-induced case of "the munchies."

This time, the boys get themselves in trouble trying to sneak a bong onboard a flight to Amsterdam. Now, being suspected of terrorism, they are forced to run from the law and try to find a way to prove their innocence. What follows is an irreverent and epic journey of deep thoughts, deeper inhaling and a wild trip around the world that is as "un-PC" as it gets.

In a comedy that brings together some of today's sharpest talent, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler team with writer/director Michael McCullers and producers Lorne Michaels and John Goldwyn to tell the story of two women, one apartment and the nine months that will change their lives: "Baby Mama."

Successful and single businesswoman Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) has long put her career ahead of a personal life. Now 37, she's finally determined to have a kid on her own. But her plan is thrown a curve ball after she discovers she has only a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant. Undaunted, the driven Kate allows South Philly working girl Angie Ostrowiski (Amy Poehler) to become her unlikely surrogate. Simple enough...

After learning from the steely head (Sigourney Weaver) of their surrogacy center that Angie is pregnant, Kate goes into precision nesting mode: reading childcare books, baby-proofing the apartment and researching top pre-schools. But the executive's well-organized strategy is turned upside down when her Baby Mama shows up at her doorstep with no place to live.

An unstoppable force meets an immovable object as structured Kate tries to turn vibrant Angie into the perfect expectant mom. In a comic battle of wills, they will struggle their way through preparation for the baby's arrival. And in the middle of this tug-of-war, they'll discover two kinds of family: the one you're born to and the one you make.
