Blu-ray 27th April Releases

It's Complicated [Blu-ray]

Universal / 2009 / 121 Minutes / Rated R
Street Date: April 27, 2010

Genres: Comedy, drama

Starring: Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin
Director: Nancy Myers

Plot Synopsis: It's delightful to see Meryl Streep come into her own as a romantic comedian in her later career years--after all the accolades, the Oscars, the serious-as-marble dramatic roles. Streep is in fact a true cutup, as she has demonstrated in films like Mamma Mia and Julie & Julia--and she gets the guy. So if Nancy Meyers's It's Complicated is perhaps a bit facile in the plot department, it's saved by a splendid romp of a performance by Streep (as Jane), along with her two leading men, Alec Baldwin (Jane's ex-husband, Jake) and Steve Martin (her supposed boyfriend, Adam). Meyers, as she did in Something's Gotta Give and Baby Boom, turns notions of over-the-hilldom--at least for women--on their ear. Streep's Jane is a contented, affluent divorcée with excellent taste in furnishings, happily about to preside over an empty nest and feeling just fine about it. Who should bump into, and ruin, this perfect solitude but Jane's ex, Jake, played to a pompous (and hilarious) fare-thee-well by Baldwin. "Turns out I'm a bit of a slut," chirps the sexually awakened Jane. The beauty of It's Complicated is that it really isn't all that complicated--its chemistry depends on the wonderful actors (including the supporting cast of John Krasinski, Lake Bell, Mary Kay Place, and Rita Wilson) and the oft-forgotten reality that people over 25 can have great sex, and fall head over heels.

Dragon Retakes #1 Over Sluggish Weekend

With Hollywood dumping its weakest films into theaters, moviegoers understandably stayed away from the multiplexes as the North American box office slumped to its lowest level of the year. New releases The Back-up Plan and The Losers generated unimpressive results allowing the five-week old 3D cartoon How to Train Your Dragon to reclaim the number one spot thanks to its continued durability. For the first time all year the top ten films failed to gross at least $90M.

After coming within a hair of nabbing the box office crown last weekend, How To Train Your Dragon won a decisive victory this time grossing $15.4M in its fifth weekend for another slim decline of only 22%, according to final studio figures. The DreamWorks blockbuster has now amassed a fantastic $178.3M and should bust through the $200M mark the same weekend as when Paramount stablemate Iron Man 2 arrives to kick off the summer movie season. The Viking toon is still on course to finish its run in the neighborhood of $225M which would be more than five times its opening weekend take thanks to amazing legs. Dragon's drops to date have been 34%, 14%, 21%, and 22%.

Fans didn't exactly turn out in large numbers for Jennifer Lopez who returned to theaters with her first major wide release in five years. Her pregnancy comedy The Back-up Plan collected $12.2M from a very wide 3,280 locations for a lackluster $3,720 average. Slammed by poor reviews, the PG-13 film about a woman who finds Mr. Right after being impregnated artificially played mostly to adult women, and failed to appeal to a broader audience. Females made up 71% of the audience, 57% were over 30, and 21% were Latino, according to distributor CBS Films. This is only the company's second release following the disastrous Brendan Fraser-Harrison Ford flop Extraordinary Measures which debuted to a terrible $6M and $2,363 average in January.

Lopez has generally been a reliable draw at the box office with her films and the opening of Plan does not necessarily mean she no longer has box office clout any more. The generic story, lack of additional starpower, and poor marks from critics all helped to prevent an opening like those of her past films. The last major Lopez vehicle was 2005's Monster-in-Law which bowed at number one with $23.1M in May, a month usually topped by big-budget action films each weekend.

Audiences made Date Night the number three choice again this weekend as the Steve Carell-Tina Fey comedy slipped just 37% to $10.5M. Fox has laughed up a solid $63.3M in 17 days and could be headed for the $90M mark.

Opening in fourth with weak results was the action film The Losers with $9.4M from 2,936 locations for a poor $3,204 average. The Warner Bros. release featuring Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan didn't have the starpower to pull in paying audiences and the story involving a group of renegade ex-soldiers seeking revenge on a criminal mastermind failed to spark any interest. Reviews were mixed for the PG-13 pic.

Kick-Ass stumbled in its second weekend falling 53% to $9.3M giving the super hero flick $34.7M in ten days. Lionsgate should end up with roughly $55M from its much-buzzed-about action film. The 3D action pic Clash of the Titans grossed $8.9M, off 42%, pushing the total for Warner Bros. up to $145.6M. Sony's comedy remake Death at a Funeral tumbled 51% in its second weekend to $8M. With $28.5M in ten days, the Chris Rock-Martin Lawrence film should finish its run with $45-50M.

Disney's new underwater documentary Oceans scored the best per-theater average of any film in wide release this weekend. The G-rated pic debuted in moderate national release with 1,206 locations and grossed $6.1M for a $5,024 average. Add in grosses from the Thursday opening on Earth Day when it ranked number one in the marketplace and the four-day cume stands at $8.5M. On a per-theater basis, the bow was almost identical to the studio's doc from this same frame last year when Earth bowed to $8.8M from a wider debut in 1,804 sites for a $4,892 average.

The Mouse House rounded out the top ten with a pair of hits. The Miley Cyrus teen romance The Last Song dropped 37% to $3.8M for a $55.5M total to date. Alice in Wonderland, the biggest non-Pandora 3D movie of all-time, fell 38% to $2.3M boosting the total to $327.5M.

The Back-up Plan

The Back-up Plan is a comedy that explores dating, love, marriage and family “in reverse.” After years of dating, Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) has decided waiting for the right one is taking too long. Determined to become a mother, she commits to a plan, makes an appointment and decides to go it alone. That same day, Zoe meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin) – a man with real possibilities. Trying to nurture a budding relationship and hide the early signs of pregnancy becomes a comedy of errors for Zoe and creates confusing signals for Stan. Anyone can fall in love, get married and have a baby but doing it backwards in hyper-drive is the real pregnancy test.

Oceans

Nearly three-quarters of the earth's surface is covered by oceans. French co-directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud have set out to capture the full expanse of these waters that have played such a crucial and constant role in the history and sustenance of man. The deep and abundant oceans are places of great mysteries and dangers that this film will dare to explore.

"Dragon" Edges Out "Kick-Ass" At Box Office

It was another close race at the North American box office which saw the four-week old 3D toon How to Train Your Dragon edge out the new super hero saga Kick-Ass for the number one spot thanks to its incredible staying power. The frame's other new release, the comedy remake Death at a Funeral, performed well with a solid debut in fourth place. Sophomore comedy hit Date Night posted strong legs in third place while most holdovers did well overall.

Snatching the box office crown for the second time in its four-week run, the DreamWorks smash How To Train Your Dragon dipped only 20% to an estimated $20M propelling its cume to a stellar $158.6M after only 24 days of release. Audiences are loving Paramount's PG-rated animated film and recommending it to friends making it a leggy blockbuster that could reach $225M or more from North America alone. 3D films have led the box office for seven consecutive weeks now and have ruled over 14 of the last 18 weekends.

Opening close behind in second place was the super hero flick Kick-Ass with an estimated $19.8M from 3,065 theaters for a good $6,444 average. Many expected the violent R-rated actioner to capture the top spot with ease thanks to a wave of internet and fanboy buzz stoked by the film's strategic promotional plan which included a preview at Comic-Con last summer and a full opening night screening at South by Southwest last month. Reviews were mostly positive too and the film's 11-year-old heroine, a cursing and killing machine with lethal machine gun skills, excited the core audience just as much as she angered parental groups.

Kick-Ass delivered an opening that was certainly good, but not amazing, putting into question whether pre-release expectations were logical to begin with. Looking back at violent R-rated films opening in April, 2004's Kill Bill Vol. 2 bowed to $25.1M while the following year's Sin City debuted to $29.1M. Was it fair to think that Kick-Ass could draw in as much business?

Grosses may have taken a hit thanks to Carmike theaters not playing any Lionsgate releases currently. However, the distributor had no problem booking playdates nationwide as Kick-Ass enjoyed the fourth widest opening in company history. Lionsgate rarely launches films in more than 3,000 locations. Its only wider bows include Saw IV, Saw III, and The Forbidden Kingdom which all debuted in 3,150-3,200 theaters.

For this weekend, the super hero pic debuted to $7.7M on Friday (including the first shows that began at 10pm on Thursday night) and dipped 5% to $7.3M on Saturday. The distributor is projecting an aggressive $4.9M for Sunday which would amount to a decline of just 33% from Saturday. Final grosses to be released on Monday could be lower. Kick-Ass cost $50M to produce with Lionsgate acquiring domestic rights for $15-20M plus paying for marketing.

Those not interested in cartoon Vikings or school-age crusaders spent their money seeing Date Night which enjoyed a remarkable hold in its second weekend. The Steve Carell-Tina Fey comedy declined by only 31% to an estimated $17.3M and boosted its ten-day total to a solid $49.2M. Reaching $100M is a definite possibility for the $55M-budgeted film. Good word-of-mouth and a lack of direct competition are both helping to fuel sales.

Opening in fourth place was the Chris Rock-Martin Lawrence comedy Death at a Funeral which took in an estimated $17M from 2,459 theaters for a solid $6,913 average - the best in the top ten. The R-rated film, a remake of a British pic from just three years ago, tells of hi-jinks that result after the death of the patriarch of a family. Tracy Morgan, Danny Glover, Zoe Saldana, and AT&T pitchman Luke Wilson also star. Reviews were generally weak. Studio research showed that 56% of the audience was female and 56% was 25 or older.

Falling from first to fifth place was two-time champ Clash of the Titans which grossed an estimated $15.8M, down a respectable 41% in its third lap. Warner Bros. has banked $133M in 17 days and is headed for $160-170M. Overseas ticket buyers spent an estimated $53.6M on Perseus and pals boosting the international take to $188.7M and the worldwide haul to $321.7M. The global gross could skyrocket to $600M by the end of the run making the studio happy about its last-minute upgrade from 2D to 3D.
