Explosive $201M Debut for Transformers

THIS WEEKEND Robots ruled the box office as the highly-anticipated action sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen generated the second biggest opening in history with a gargantuan $201.2M in its first five days, according to studio estimates, sending the overall marketplace to its highest gross of the year. The eye-popping figure included $112M over the traditional Friday-to-Sunday period plus an additional $89.2M since its Wednesday launch. Playing ultrawide in 4,234 theaters including 169 IMAX screens, the Paramount release averaged a stunning $26,453 over the Friday-to-Sunday period and a gigantic $47,531 over five days.

The only other film to ever gross more in its first five days was last summer's The Dark Knight which hauled in a slightly better $203.8M from 4,366 venues. The first Transformers bowed to $155.4M in 6.5 days and needed 12.5 days to break the double-century mark on its way to a $319.2M finish.

The Michael Bay-directed pic set a number of other box office milestones. It set new records for a June opener, beating the $93.7M of 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and for a live-action film from Paramount exceeding the $100.1M of last summer's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In fact, Shia Labeof hopes to become the first star with $300M+ blockbusters over three straight summers with Transformers, Crystal Skull, and Fallen. The new Optimus Prime adventure also set a new five-day debut record for a Wednesday opener easily beating the $152.4M of Spider-Man 2 from 2004.

The onslaught began at 12:01am on Wednesday with an explosive $60.6M opening day haul which included over $16M in business from late Tuesday's post-midnight shows. It was the second largest opening day for any film after the $67.2M for Dark Knight which bowed on a Friday. Grosses dropped 53% to $28.6M on Thursday, rose 29% to $36.8M on Friday, and climbed again by 10% to $40.6M on Saturday. Paramount is being aggressive with its Sunday estimate of $34.6M projecting just a 15% dip from Saturday. Final grosses will be reported on Monday afternoon. The Friday-to-Sunday tally is the seventh best of all-time and the largest for a film not debuting on a Friday.

The new Transformers brought back the main cast members of the first installment including Labeouf and Megan Fox who have become even bigger draws with teens and young adults over the past two years. Fearing being crushed, competing studios left the whole month of June open when it came to big action tentpoles allowing Fallen to be the only action event film out there. A massive marketing campaign by the studio and its tie-in partners drove awareness for the product placement-friendly flick sky high. Critics were brutal and tossed every insult they could at the behemoth, but ticket buyers were more interested in two and a half hours of mindless popcorn escapism.

Overseas audiences were crazy for robot action too as the second Transformers flick has pulled in a stunning $181.6M since its launch a week ago making for a jaw-dropping $382.8M worldwide cume which already makes it the second biggest global blockbuster for the whole year trailing just Angels & Demons which has collected $467.7M in seven weeks. A whopping 72% of that take has come from outside of North America. Fallen is playing more evenly with domestic accounting for 53%.

A sizable drop is expected for Transformers next weekend, but with no effects-driven tentpoles scheduled to open until the July 15th launch of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the domestic haul could very well shoot past $350M in the weeks ahead.
Sandra Bullock followed in second place with what could become the top-grossing film of her career, The Proposal. The romantic comedy hit dropped a reasonable 45% in its second weekend to an estimated $18.5M giving Buena Vista a solid $69.1M in only ten days. Co-starring Ryan Reynolds, the phony engagement flick should be able to finish in the vicinity of $125M surpassing the $121.2M of 1994's Speed to be the highest earner for the actress. Admission prices have risen a steep 75% in the last 15 years so Proposal will not sell as many tickets though.

With robot fights hitting the multiplexes, the leggy comedy sensation The Hangover suffered its largest decline yet. Dropping 36%, still a good hold, the R-rated laugher grossed an estimated $17.2M lifting the cume to $183.2M. Hangover is set to smash through the $200M mark over next weekend's Independence Day holiday frame.

Carl and Russell overtook Kirk and Spock for the year's box office crown as the animated smash Up sailed past the quarter-billion mark. The tenth toon from Disney and Pixar dropped 45% to an estimated $13M in its fifth weekend to boost the amazing cume to $250.2M making it 2009's top-grossing title. Optimus Prime will steal away that prize later this week, but Up still has hopes of surpassing the $300M milestone and now sits at number 47 on the list of all-time domestic blockbusters behind Night at the Museum's $250.9M. The flying house flick is running only slightly behind the pace of 2003's Finding Nemo which banked $14M in its fifth round for a cume of $254M.

The frame's only other new wide opener landed in fifth place. The family drama My Sister's Keeper starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin bowed to an estimated $12M from 2,606 locations for a moderate average of $4,616 per theater. The PG-13 film based on the best-selling book about a girl fighting leukemia earned good reviews and played to a more female audience and those in the market for a good cry.

Sony placed its pair of not-so-stellar performers in the sixth and seventh slots. The Jack Black-Michael Cera comedy Year One collapsed 70% in its second weekend to an estimated $5.8M for a ten-day total of $32.3M. The Denzel Washington-John Travolta hostage pic The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 grossed an estimated $5.4M, down a troubling 55%, to a cume of $53.4M after 17 days. The studio cannot be pleased with these declines.

Paramount's Star Trek slipped 35% to an estimated $3.6M and boosted its amazing total to $246.2M. Despite the arrival of studio stablemate Transformers, the Enterprise held up impressively. Close behind was Fox's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian which fell 55% to an estimated $3.5M giving the sequel $163.2M to date.

The indie pregnancy comedy Away We Go expanded nationally and landed in the top ten for the very first time this weekend. The Focus release widened from 132 to 495 locations grossing an estimated $1.7M which was good enough for the ten spot. Averaging a mild $3,390, the R-rated pic has taken in $4.1M to date and continues to grow thanks to good word-of-mouth, more screens, and a larger ad spend.

On the specialty front, Summit's critically acclaimed Iraq War thriller The Hurt Locker opened with strength in New York and Los Angeles with an estimated $144,000 from just four sites for a potent $36,000 average. Pic expands on July 10. Miramax debuted its Michelle Pfeiffer period romance Cheri wider in 76 locations and grossed an estimated $408,000 for a mild $5,368 average. Reviews were mixed.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $192.7M which was up 9% from last year when WALL•E opened in the top spot with $63.1M; and up 36% from 2007 when Pixar also ruled when Ratatouille debuted at number one with $47M.

"Transformers" in high gear already

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Debuting Wednesday to an estimated $60.6 million, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" already has begun its triumphal rounding of the box office bases that should see it set a record or two by weekend's end.

Once Michael Bay's sequel to the 2007 hit based on the Hasbro toy line staked out the upcoming weekend, there was never any question that it would dominate overall sales. Competitors steered clear of the date, with only Warner Bros. fielding the feel-good weepie "My Sister's Keeper" in a modest bit of counterprogramming.

So the new "Transformers" -- machine-tooled with the help of a budget said to have approached $200 million -- isn't really competing against the other current releases: The Paramount release is out to do battle against the record book.

If Paramount's first-day sales estimate holds, the sequel already can claim the distinction of the biggest Wednesday opening ever. It vaulted ahead of 2007's "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," which bowed to a one-day gross of $44.2 million.

It came unexpectedly close to challenging "The Dark Knight," which holds the records for biggest opening-day gross and best single-day gross: It collected $67.2 million when it opened last year on a Friday. And it squeezed ahead of 2007's "Spider-Man 3," which debuted to $59.8 million, which had enjoyed runner-up status to "Knight" in the best single opening-day list.

"Transformers'" accelerated takeoff was turbo-charged with the help of $16 million from midnight screenings, included in that $60.6 million opening number.

Entering the weekend, the Paramount/DreamWorks co-production -- which is looking to draw in a wide audience base with the help of its fast-rising stars, Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox -- looks on track to surpass the debut of the first "Transformers," which opened on a Monday evening and collected $155.4 million in its first 6-1/2 days. By the close of business Sunday, the sequel probably will have passed that mark and in just its first five days.

In doing so, it also would overshadow 2004's "Spider-Man 2," which holds the record for the best Wednesday-through-Sunday opening with $152.4 million.

"Transformers" still would have a hard time challenging "Dark Knight" for the best five-day gross of all time, $203.8 million. "Dark Knight" was a hit with the fans and critics. Not so "Transformers," which as of Thursday had a low-ball 22 percent approval rating at Rottentomatoes.com.

But Bay's movies have never depended on critics. During the Friday-to-Sunday portion of its debut, the first "Transformers" pulled in $70.5 million. If its sequel maintains its momentum, it will best that number, attracting $80 million-$90 million and possibly more as it heads toward a five-day gross of at least $150 million-$175 million.

The holdovers at the multiplex will have to settle for doing business in "Transformers'" shadow. Disney's rom-com "The Proposal," last weekend's top grosser, Warners' breakout comedy "The Hangover" and Disney/Pixar's animated "Up" should all move down a notch, as they register numbers in the high-teen millions.

"Sister's Keeper," starring Cameron Diaz in the tale of a family dealing with one daughter's leukemia, is aiming to lure older female moviegoers from the "Transformers" juggernaut. One of its selling points is that it's directed by Nick Cassavetes, who directed "The Notebook," a leggy, summer sleeper. "Keeper," though, is probably looking at a gross around the $10 million mark for its opening weekend.

For the handful of moviegoers who turn a deaf ear to "Transformers," the specialty arena will host several new titles.

Miramax will present Stephen Frears' period romantic drama "Cheri," starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates and Rupert Friend.

Roadside Attractions may benefit from the world's focus on events in Iran as it releases Cyrus Nowrasteh's "The Stoning of Soraya M.," which examines the plight of one Iranian woman. And Summit Entertainment introduces Kathryn Bigelow's Iraq-set "The Hurt Locker," a critical hit on the festival circuit, in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. On Rottentomatoes.com, that film's approval rating had reached an enthusiastic 97 percent on Thursday. [Source from: reuters.com]

Braveheart - BD Preorder

Paramount has officially announced plans to bring the Academy Award-winning 'Braveheart' to Blu-ray in September.

The Mel Gibson epic will hit high-definition on September 1 as part of Paramount's new premium Blu-ray Sapphire Series line.

The 2-disc set will feature 1080p video, a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack, and over two hours of new content including:

• Interactive Timelines—Three distinct timelines featuring a combination of video, images, text and audio that can be accessed linearly or randomly.

o Production: A comprehensive chronology of the motion picture from conception through theatrical release, from a behind-the-scenes point of view.

o Historical: Chronological modules feature Scotland’s greatest patriot, along with historical places, figures and events surrounding his life and struggle.

o Fiction: A comprehensive timeline identifying the chronological events of the film.

• Braveheart: A Look Back— Features new interviews with members of the cast and crew reminiscing about their experiences making the film and its enduring impact on cinema.

• Smithfield: Medieval Killing Fields—Relates the remarkable history of Smithfield, which for centuries was regularly filled with the roars of crowds, regal fanfares and rowdy games. Smithfield is also known as the site of William Wallace’s execution, along with other terrifying spectacles when heretics, rebels and criminals were put to death.

• Battlefields of the Scottish Rebellion— Two major Scottish battlefields, Falkirk and Bannockburn, will be presented as 3D models that can be explored for further investigation into the military strategies and timetables employed in each. Topography, weapons, troop movements, and leadership data can also be accessed. An alternate playing mode will allow the story of each battle to unfold in an “automated” fashion, much like the interactive dioramas displayed at historical site museums around the world.

Gladiator - BD Preorder

Paramount says 'Gladiator' will make its way to Blu-ray in September.

The Academy Award-winning Russell Crowe epic will hit high-definition on September 1. Just like 'Braveheart,' 'Gladiator' will be part of Paramount's premium Blu-ray Sapphire Series line.

The 2-disc set will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and over two hours of new content including:

• Audio Commentary—Two separate commentaries accompany the original theatrical version and extended version of the film.

• The Scrolls of Knowledge—The original trivia track has been newly enhanced with focus points allowing viewers to access a series of new behind-the-scenes featurettes exploring key scenes and how they relate to the historical accuracy depicted in the film. The extended version of the film also includes a deleted scene marker.

• Visions from Elysium: Topic Marker—Viewers can tag moments of interest throughout either version of the film, allowing them to create “shopping lists” of topics to learn more about. Thanks to the Blu-ray player’s memory, the topics will automatically be loaded when Disc 2 is inserted, giving viewers immediate access to featurettes and galleries of interest.

• Strength and Honor: Creating The World of Gladiator—The definitive documentary on the origin, production and impact of the Oscar®-winning classic. The documentary includes an all-new Enhanced Viewing Mode allowing viewers access to additional interviews and behind-the-scenes material.

• The Making of Gladiator—HBO First Look special.

• Gladiator Games: The Roman Bloodsport—Learning Channel special.

• Hans Zimmer: Scoring Gladiator—An exploration of the rousing soundtrack.

• My Gladiator Journal—Personal diary of the young actor who played Lucius.

• Image & Design—Featurettes and galleries covering the production design, storyboards, costumes and more.

• Abandoned Sequences & Deleted Scenes.

• VFX Explorations: Germania & Rome—Shot deconstruction with the visual effects artists.

Forrest Gump - BD Preorder

Paramount has slated 'Forrest Gump' for high-definition release in November.

A few months after the 'Braveheart' and 'Gladiator' Blu-rays hit stores, the Academy Award-winning 'Forrest Gump' will be the next inclusion in Paramount's premium Blu-ray Sapphire Series line on November 3.

The 2-disc set will feature 1080p video. An all-new roundtable discussion will be included, but no other specs have been revealed at this time.

'Confessions of a Shopaholic' - BD Preorder

Fun 'Shopaholic' Facts:

The film shot inside of some of the most exclusive stores and boutiques in New York, including Barneys New York flagship store on Madison Avenue, Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue, Scoop and Catherine Malandrino in the Meat Packing District, Alessi (upscale housewares) in Soho, and Kleinfeld (elaborate bridal shop) in Chelsea.

The film also shot inside some of the most historic buildings in the city, including legendary British architect Lord Norman Foster's Hearst Tower (the only film to ever be allowed to shoot there) on 57th Street and 8th Avenue; 45 Rockefeller Center (the building that features the statue of Atlas holding up the world at its entrance); the Grand Salon inside of the 1931 Jumeirah Essex House hotel on Central Park South; inside and out of St. James Church (1884) on Madison Avenue between 71st and 72nd Streets; inside of the Beaux Arts and Art Nouveau styled Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank Building (1908-12) on Chambers Street in the Wall Street district; utilizing the exterior of St. Anthony of Padua on Sullivan Street at the intersection of Greenwich Village, Tribeca and Soho, founded in 1866.

The production spent two all-nighters dressing the beautiful atrium of Henri Bendel with a Midsummer Night's Dream themed design, as well as the aviator-themed window displays. They also created window displays for the Hearst Tower with faux stores by Valentino, Anna Sui, Catherine Malandrino and Alberto Ferretti. Excited New Yorkers thought that actual stores had opened on the ground level of the Tower and were sorely disappointed to discover that they were only for the movie.

Across the street from St. James Church, windows were re-dressed in actual Yves St. Laurent, Asprey and Sonia Rykiel stores for the film's climax.

In the film, costume designer Patricia Field selected clothing and accessories to adorn Isla Fisher's Becky Bloomwood, including Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin, Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen, Miu Miu, Salvatore Ferragamo, Prada, Christian Dior, Todd Oldham, Gucci and Matthew Williamson, among others.

To create a lavish display in Henri Bendel's six-story atrium, as well as window decorations, production designer Kristi Zea and supervising art director Paul Kelly had to bring in a full complement of their department to pull an all-nighter with military precision, as they only had enough time between the store closing its doors to the public and reopening them again in the morning to pull off the impossible. Mission was accomplished, with legions of New Yorkers admiring the results before the cameras began rolling later that day.

Filming in New York City gave the filmmakers access to the pool of local actors perhaps better known for their work in the theatre than on film, including Christine Ebersole (Tony Award winner as Best Actress in a Musical for "Grey Gardens"), LaChanze (Tony Award winner as Best Actress in a Musical for "The Color Purple") and Kaitlin Hopkins (star of the upcoming touring company of "Dirty Dancing: The Musical").

Ed Helms of "The Office" is seen only on videotape in the movie as self-help money management guru Garrett E. Barton.

A bank loan officer is portrayed by Jonathan Tisch, Loews Hotel Chairman and CEO; and in a publishing reception scene filmed in Chicago, another banker is played by Andy Serwer, managing editor of Fortune Magazine.

Robert Stanton, who plays ruthless debt collector Derek Smeath, drew upon the only other job he ever had besides actor: a skip tracer for a student loan company, finding people who had defaulted on their debts. Stanton admits that he wasn't good at harassing people, since he would always burst out in laughter instead.

Sophie Kinsella was on the "Confessions of a Shopaholic" set nearly every day as associate producer, consulting and watching her beloved creation of Rebecca Bloomwood come to life. Not so coincidentally considering the massive international sales of the "Shopaholic" novels, Kinsella was often approached by excited fans on New York, Connecticut and Miami locations as if she were more of a movie star than an author.

Audiences Can't Refuse Bullock's Proposal

MovieWeb - Movie Photos, Videos & More

LAST WEEKEND Sandra Bullock showed North America who's boss with her return to romantic comedy in The Proposal which gave the actress the biggest opening of her career and her first number one hit in over a decade. Rival comedy Year One enjoyed a respectable debut in fourth place while holdover sensations The Hangover and Up continued their amazing runs with small declines once again. Thanks to four funny films topping $20M a piece, the overall marketplace inched ahead of last year's levels for the first time in four weeks putting the industry in a good position with Megan Fox and the Autobots on the horizon.

Moviegoers gave a very loud yes to Bullock this weekend as The Proposal powered ahead of expectations to open to an estimated $34.1M to easily lead the box office race. The bow nearly doubled the $17.6M of her 2007 thriller Premonition to set a new record for the actress who since the mid 1990s has routinely opened films in the $13-17M range. It was also the largest opening for any romantic comedy this year beating the $27.8M of February's He's Just Not That Into You which boasted more starpower with Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, and Drew Barrymore. Proposal averaged a scorching $11,163 from 3,056 locations.

With many male-skewing comedies and action pics this summer, Buena Vista found a great slot on the calendar to target women and was rewarded with a potent debut. Studio research showed that 63% of the audience was female and 86% was 18 and older. Couples made up 71%. Reviews were mixed, but ticket buyers responded to the starpower of the extremely likable lead, good marketing, and the story. Bullock plays a Canadian-born book editor who must pretend to be engaged to her assistant (Ryan Reynolds) in order to avoid deportation. The studio offered sneak previews last weekend which helped to get buzz going among adult women and the date crowd.

Bullock has avoided romantic comedies for much of this decade and audiences clearly missed her. The last time she reached the top of the charts was in March 1999 with Forces of Nature co-starring Ben Affleck which spent two weeks at number one. Proposal performed much like the studio's 2002 blockbuster Sweet Home Alabama, another star-driven rom-com about an uptight New York City big shot who must travel to small town America to fix her wedding dilemmas. That Reese Witherspoon hit opened to $35.6M on its way to a stellar $127.2M.

Though booted from the top spot, the runaway comedy smash The Hangover still attracted strong business in its third weekend slipping a mere 18% to an estimated $26.9M propelling the cume to an eye-popping $152.9M. After just 17 days, the Warner Bros. hit has already surpassed the total grosses of recent R-rated summer comedy hits like Sex and the City ($152.6M), Knocked Up ($148.8M), Superbad ($121.5M), and The 40-Year-Old Virgin ($109.2M). This weekend, the men-behaving-badly smash also passed Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino ($148.1M) to become the highest-grossing R flick since 300 which launched in March 2007 on its way to $210.6M. All three were distributed by Warner Bros. Hangover now looks set to pass $225M and could even reach the $250M mark although with its incredible durability, the sky's the limit.

For the third straight session, Pixar's Up followed Hangover on the charts and collected an estimated $21.3M in its fourth weekend. Down only 31%, the Disney release shattered the $200M barrier on Thursday and boosted its 24-day total to $224.1M. Up is performing very much like Pixar's biggest fish Finding Nemo which dropped 26% to $21.1M in its fourth weekend putting its total at $228.5M. With help from higher ticket prices and surcharges for 3D, Up is running only 2% behind Nemo's pace. But the road ahead will get tricky as Fox will steal away most of Up's 3D screens when it launches its animated sequel Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs on July 1 leaving the flying house flick with mostly 2D runs. Fox held sneaks of Ice Age on Sunday nationwide in select theaters for Father's Day.

More comedy could be found in the number four spot. The Jack Black-Michael Cera vehicle Year One bowed with an estimated $20.2M from 3,022 locations for a solid $6,684 average. Young guys were the primary audience for the PG-13 tale of two slacker hunter-gathers from ancient times who go out and explore the world. Studio research showed that males made up 57% of the audience while 47% were under 21. With other comedies targeting adult women, older adults, and small kids, Sony found an opportunity to connect with its target demo. But the road ahead will get difficult very quickly with a gargantuan debut expected for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen starting Tuesday night at midnight.

Audiences didn't take to Denzel Washington in the second weekend of his hostage thriller The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. The Sony release tumbled 52% to an estimated $11.3M putting the ten-day tally at $43.3M. It was a bigger sophomore drop than those the Oscar winner saw with previous R-rated pics like Man on Fire (34%), Inside Man (47%), and American Gangster (45%). Budgeted at more than $100M, Pelham should finish its North American run with $65-70M and will need a strong international run.

Two franchise films with strong legs followed. Fox's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian grossed an estimated $7.3M, down 24%, for a $156M cume to date. Ranking as the year's top-grossing film for possibly the last weekend, Star Trek dipped only 14% to an estimated $4.7M and has collected a stellar $239.4M thus far.

Rounding out the top ten were some of the summer's unlucky films. Crashing 56% in its third weekend, Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost fell to eighth place with an estimated $4M and a total of $43.7M for Universal. Fellow SNL alum Eddie Murphy followed with his latest box office stinker Imagine That which grossed an estimated $3.1M for Paramount, off 44%, putting the sum at a pitiful $11.4M after ten days. Terminator Salvation dropped 36% to an estimated $3.1M giving Warner Bros. $119.5M domestically.
