'Shutter Island" Capture #1 Spot Box Office

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio scored the biggest openings of their careers with the psychological thriller Shutter Island, the fourth teaming between the two men, which easily led the North American box office. With no other films debuting in wide release, the rest of the top ten was filled with holdovers, most of which dropped by more than 50% from last weekend's record holiday session. The top ten films beat out year-ago levels, however the Top 20 fell behind last year's performance due to the current marketplace's lack of depth.

Moviegoers spent the weekend with the criminally insane as the mystery thriller Shutter Island debuted at number one with an estimated $40.2M. Paramount launched the R-rated film in 2,991 theaters and averaged a strong $13,440 per site. Previous bests for the men were $26.9M for the director's The Departed and $30.1M for the actor's Catch Me If You Can. Last August, the studio surprised the industry by moving Shutter from October 2 (the same slot that worked wonders for Departed) to this current weekend. While the date change took the film out of this winter's awards season, it allowed the pic to squeeze more value from its marketing materials. Plus the studio was able to run a very well-received TV spot during the Super Bowl two weeks ago to help heighten excitement.

Shutter Island scored the ninth biggest opening in February and the fourth best for an R-rated film. It was also the second highest for 2010 behind just Valentine's Day from last weekend. Studio research showed that the $75M production played evenly among males and females as well as with those over and under 25. Reviews were good overall but critics were not ecstatic. Scorsese's films have typically been more artsy and have almost always debuted to less than $12M from more narrow releases. Shutter was a more commercial vehicle and was sold as a mainstream thriller from an Oscar-winning filmmaker which was all that was needed to convince ticket buyers.

After a huge top spot debut, the romantic comedy Valentine's Day couldn't score a second date with audiences as the Warner Bros. release tumbled by a disturbing 70% to an estimated $17.2M. But it was still a good showing for a film of its type in the sophomore frame and helped to boost the ten-day tally to a solid $87.4M. Much of the decline was due to Sunday's take which fell sharply from last Sunday which was Valentine's Day. Compared to last weekend's daily grosses, the PG-13 film dropped 61% on Friday, 60% on Saturday, but a steep 82% on Sunday. A final tally of $120-130M seems likely.

The unstoppable Na'vi pic Avatar climbed one spot to third with an estimated $16.1M, off only 32%, boosting the record-shattering total to $687.8M. James Cameron is on track to score the first-ever $700M-grossing blockbuster by next Sunday, the last day of February.

Fox claimed fourth place too with the fantasy adventure Percy Jackson & The Olympians which dropped 51% to an estimated $15.3M in its second round. The PG-rated effects pic has banked $58.8M in ten days and has a shot at breaking the $100M mark by the end of its run. Universal's monster flick The Wolfman suffered a 69% fall to an estimated $9.8M and lifted its cume to $50.3M in ten days. Produced for over $100M, the R-rated thriller should finish with around $70M.

Former chart-topper Dear John ranked sixth with an estimated $7.3M, off 55%, giving Sony $66M to date. Playing to a slightly different audience, The Tooth Fairy slipped only 26% to an estimated $4.5M for a $49.9M sum for Fox.

The studio's fourth title in the top ten came from Fox Searchlight's Oscar contender Crazy Heart which dipped only 29% to an estimated $3M for a $21.6M total thus far. John Travolta's From Paris With Love dropped 55% to an estimated $2.5M while Mel Gibson's Edge of Darkness fell 54% to an estimated $2.2M. Cumes stand at $21.2M and $40.3M, respectively.

It was an eventful weekend for director Roman Polanski who is currently under house arrest in Switzerland. His newest film The Ghost Writer won him the Silver Lion award for best director at the Berlin International Film Festival and also generated a muscular platform launch in the United States with an estimated $179,000 from just four theaters for a sizzling $44,750 average. Bowing in only two locations a piece in New York and Los Angeles, Summit's PG-13 film starring Pierce Brosnan, Ewan McGregor, Kim Cattrall, and Tom Wilkinson earned strong reviews but just a moderate B+ CinemaScore from ticket buyers. Ghost expands into ten more markets on Friday as it continues to roll out across the country.

Shutter Island

The film, based on the novel "Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane, is an atmospheric psychological thriller set in a 1950s asylum for the criminally insane. It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Shutter Island's Ashecliffe Hospital. He'd been gunning for an assignment on the island for reasons of his own -- but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.

Teddy's code-breaking skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues proliferate, Teddy begins to doubt everything -- his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

The Ghost Writer
Copyright © 2010 Summit Entertainment

When a successful British ghostwriter, The Ghost, agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang, his agent assures him it's the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems doomed from the start—not least because his predecessor on the project, Lang's long-term aide, died in an unfortunate accident.

The Ghost flies out to work on the project, in the middle of winter, to an oceanfront house on an island off the U.S. Eastern seaboard. But the day after he arrives, a former British cabinet minister accuses Lang of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the CIA—a war crime. The controversy brings reporters and protesters swarming to the island mansion where Lang is staying with his wife, Ruth, and his personal assistant (and mistress), Amelia. As The Ghost works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may have stumbled on a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA—and that somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left behind. Was Lang in the service of the American intelligence agency while he was prime minister? And was The Ghost's predecessor murdered because of the appalling truth he uncovered?

Resonating with topical themes, this atmospheric and suspenseful political thriller is a story of deceit and betrayal on every level— sexual, political and literary. In a world in which nothing, and no one, is as it seems, The Ghost quickly discovers that the past can be deadly—and that history is decided by whoever stays alive to write it.

Coco Before Chanel [Blu-ray]

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / 2009 / 110 Minutes / Unrated
Street Date: February 16, 2010

Genres: Drama

Starring: Audrey Tautou, Marie Gillain
Director: Anne Fontaine

Plot Synopsis: Before she became Coco, the world-famous fashion designer, Gabrielle Chanel (Audrey Tautou in a fiercely determined performance) struggled to make ends meet. After her mother's death, her father deposited her and her sister, Adrienne (Marie Gillain), at an orphanage, where they learned to sew (and where Chanel developed a taste for monochromatic ensembles). They went on to become cabaret singers, but when Adrienne runs off with a wealthy suitor, the newly christened Coco must go it alone until she meets gentleman farmer Étienne Balsan (Benoît Poelvoorde). She lives comfortably at his chateau, but he refuses to take her out in public, so she puts her skills as a seamstress to good use and designs outfits for his lady friends, like Emilienne (Emmanuelle Devos), an actress. Chanel's situation improves further when British investor Arthur "Boy" Capel (Alessandro Nivola with an impeccable French accent) enters the scene. Her working-class origins present less of a problem with Capel, though the couple will have other issues with which to contend. In the meantime, he gives her the money to open her own Parisian studio, and the film ends with the tweed suit-clad Chanel of the popular imagination. Until that time, writer-director Anne Fontaine (The Girl from Monaco) presents a very different character, a woman who wasn't worldly or sophisticated, but who saw no reason why fashion--or "style," as she called it--should be complicated or uncomfortable. In transforming herself, Coco Chanel transformed an entire industry and, arguably, an entire gender.

Disc Features:
COMMENTARY with Writer/Director Anne Fontaine
Historical Reconstruction (SD, 46 min.)
Coco Before Chanel: The Meeting (SD, 18 min.)
Walking the Red Carpet: From Los Angeles to New York
Theatrical Trailer

Valentine's Day Scored #1 Box Office Chart!

Last weekend, proving how starpower can trump reviews at the box office, the romantic comedy Valentine's Day led a wave of three debuting hit films that breathed new life into the marketplace over a record four-day Presidents' Day holiday weekend. Studios underestimated Sunday's grosses as the Valentine's Day holiday fueled big gains as most films made more on Sunday than on Saturday. The top ten collected $64.4M on Saturday but then rose 11% to $71.2M on Sunday. Taking home the silver and bronze medals respectively were the fantasy pic Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief and the monster flick The Wolfman with the latter winning the Friday-to-Sunday race but the former leading over the long weekend. Powered by these three big hits, the Top 20 surged to a jaw-dropping $233M over four days, a new all-time high for this holiday.

Moviegoers looking for love lifted the star-studded ensemble comedy Valentine's Day to number one with an astonishing $63.1M over the four-day Friday-to-Monday holiday session, according to final studio figures. It set a new record for the Presidents' Day holiday beating by a wide margin the $52M four-day score of 2007's Ghost Rider while the three-day figure of $56.3M resulted in the third largest opening ever in the month of February behind just 2004's The Passion of the Christ ($83.8M) and 2001's Hannibal ($58M). Warner Bros. launched the PG-13 film ultrawide in 3,665 theaters and averaged a sensational $17,227 across four days. Very few live-action comedies have ever debuted north of $50M in three days making Day's performance remarkable. Those that have included star vehicles (Bruce Almighty's $68M), sequels (Austin Powers in Goldmember's $76.6M) and franchise pics (Sex and the City's $56.8M).

Critics panned Valentine's Day giving it some of the worst reviews of the year so far, but audiences paid no attention and responded to the abundance of stars (Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Jamie Foxx, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift among others), a strong marketing push, and the timely release over Valentine's Day weekend. The date pic charmed another $30.4M from overseas audiences in 52 markets for a $94M global gross.

There was a close battle for second place but Fox's Percy Jackson & The Olympians took the runnerup spot by a slim margin with $38.7M over the Friday-to-Monday holiday period in its first weekend. The PG-rated fantasy adventure averaged a solid $11,520 from 3,356 locations. Reviews were mixed, but the best among the three new wide openers. Percy was the only film in the top ten to drop on Sunday from Saturday as it dipped 11%.

Universal debuted its monster movie The Wolfman in third with an estimated $35.6M from 3,222 sites for a muscular $11,035 average. Produced by and starring Benicio Del Toro, the expensive effects-driven R-rated chiller played more to fans of horror and thrillers and stood out from the weekend's other offerings. Reviews were mostly bad. Overseas, it scared up $21M from 37 markets for a worldwide bite of $57M. Over the Friday-to-Sunday period, Wolfman edged out Percy $31.5M to $31.2M.

Together the three new releases grossed a staggering $137.4M over four days. That's nearly twice the $72.1M that last year's trio of new films collected over the same four-day holiday period. In 2008, four films launched over the Presidents' Day frame grossing $90.4M over four days.

Avatar dropped down to fourth place but actually saw its three-day take rise. The Pandora epic took in $23.6M over three days and $28.8M in four days propelling the record cume to $666.4M. The Fox overachiever should shatter the $700M mark before March arrives. Internationally, James Cameron was still on top with another $59M boosting the overseas haul to $1.69 billion and the worldwide tally to an eye-popping $2.36 billion.

The hit tearjerker Dear John fell from its solid first place opening and grossed $18.2M pushing the 11-day tally to $56.1M. The Sony release could end up with an impressive $80-90M. Dwayne Johnson's durable kidpic The Tooth Fairy followed with $8M for a cume of $43.9M in 25 days for Fox.

John Travolta and Mel Gibson followed with their latest action offerings. From Paris With Love grossed $6.4M for a $17.5M sum for Lionsgate. A final of around $25M is likely. Edge of Darkness dropped to $5.6M giving Warner Bros. $37.1M to date.

Fox Searchlight added 186 runs to its Oscar contender Crazy Heart and enjoyed a bump up to $5M. The Jeff Bridges pic has collected $17.5M thus far. Rounding out the top ten was the romantic comedy When in Rome which grossed $4.3M for a $26.9M total.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight's My Name is Khan opened to $1.9M over three days and $2.3M over the four-day holiday frame from 120 theaters setting a new record for the largest opening ever for a Hindi-language film in North America. The PG-13 film starring Shah Rukh Khan topped all films in release this weekend with a $18,875 per-theater average. [Full disclosure: This writer was a consultant on the release of this film.]
