Instead, he ends up with the smallest, most ornery dragon-it's even toothless! Thus begins the hijinx of the world's most lovable, unlikely hero and a most reluctant "beast." Blu-ray 23rd March Releases

The Blind Side (Limited-Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Warner Brothers / 2009 / 128 Minutes / Rated PG-13
Street Date: March 23, 2010

Overall Grade 4 out of 5Recommended

Genres: Drama, based on true event

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Kathy Bates, and Quinton Aaron
Director: John Lee Hancock

Plot Synopsis: The Blind Side takes the true story of a young man who went from abandonment to success as a pro-football player and treats it with respect. The movie doesn't oversell what is, on the face of it, already compelling. It's almost impossible to describe the plot without sounding painfully inspirational: Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron, Be Kind Rewind), a hulking but gentle African-American teen in Tennessee, gets taken in by a well-to-do white family; the mother, Leigh Anne Touhy (Sandra Bullock), pushes and mothers the boy, who eventually wins a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi. In the wrong hands, this could have been maudlin, manipulative, and condescending. To the credit of writer-director John Lee Hancock, adapting Michael Lewis's acclaimed book, the result is intelligent, genuine, and alternately funny and moving. Leigh Anne could easily have been grandstanding and virtuous, but Bullock doesn't shy away from her vain and domineering side. The football scenes will be gripping even to non-sports fans because they've been so successfully grounded in Michael's emotional life. The all-around solid cast includes country music star Tim McGraw, pint-sized Jae Head (Hancock), and Kathy Bates as the tutor who guided Michael's academic success. Don't be surprised if you can't keep yourself from watching all the real-life photos of Michael, Leigh Anne, and the rest of the family that are featured in the credits; by the end of the movie, you will care about them all.

Disc Features:
Michael Oher exclusive: rare interview with the pro footballer whose life the film depicts
Sidelines: Conversations on The Blind Side:
-Sandra Bullock and Leigh Anne Tuohy go one-on-one
-Director/screenwriter John Lee Hancock and author Michael Lewis go one-on-one
Acting Coaches: Behind The Blind Side: Six legendary SEC college football coaches come together
The Story of Big Quinton: Actor Quinton Aaron's life story

Alice In Wonderland Hit #1 Again For 3rd Week

The Red Queen ruled once again as Disney's Alice in Wonderland remained at number one for the third consecutive frame beating out another pack of new releases. Fox's tween comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid beat expectations to open in second place while Sony's Jennifer Aniston-Gerard Butler vehicle The Bounty Hunter enjoyed a solid debut of its own close behind in third. But Universal's new action entry Repo Men flopped in fourth with a miserable showing. The overall box office was up over 2009 for the fourth straight weekend.

Audiences lined up again for some 3D fun with Johnny Depp with Alice in Wonderland easily defending its crown with $34.2M in its third round according to final studio figures, off just 46%, boosting the 17-day cume to a stellar $265.4M. It was Disney's first three-peat at number one since Depp's megahit Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest from July 2006. Staying atop the box office chart for this long is rare these days. Outside of Avatar, the last film to spend three weekends in first place was Tropic Thunder from the summer of 2008.

Alice smashed the $250M mark on Saturday after only 16 days and looks headed for the $350M mark. The Tim Burton pic is already the second highest-grossing film to ever open in the January-to-April corridor trailing just The Passion of the Christ which hauled in $370.3M in 2004 after a late February debut. This weekend, Alice also joined the list of the Top 50 all-time domestic blockbusters sitting at number 45 between Shrek ($267.7M) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ($262M).

Fox posted brawny numbers for its kidpic Diary of a Wimpy Kid which debuted in second place with $22.1M from 3,077 playdates for a strong $7,191 average. Based on the popular middle school-set book, the PG-rated film had no stars but instead capitalized on a built-in audience of fans attracting an impressive amount of business considering how Alice in Wonderland is still playing well to kids of all ages. With a budget of under $20M, the studio should not only see a healthy profit from box office and DVD sales but will also have a new franchise since there are still three more books in the series that can keep the cash coming in. Studio research indicated that 59% of the audience was under 25 and 51% was female. Fox is expecting upcoming spring and Easter school closings to keep the film going.

Opening close behind in third place was the battle-of-the-exes film The Bounty Hunter which seized $20.7M from 3,074 theaters for a solid $6,729 average. The PG-13 pic starring Gerard Butler as a bounty hunter assigned to capture his bail-jumping ex-wife played by Jennifer Aniston catered to an audience of adult women. Studio research showed that 58% of the crowd was female with the 50/50 age split at 30 instead of 25. The opening was almost identical to the $21.6M debut of 2008's Fool's Gold starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. Both were battle-of-the-sexes action-comedies directed by Andy Tennant with poor reviews that were sold on the starpower of the beautiful people on screen. Gold, which enjoyed a holiday on its second weekend, ended with $70.2M and Bounty could approach the same vicinity which would be an encouraging performance given the budget that was in the low $40M range. Overseas potential looks solid as Aniston has been a bankable draw and Butler has seen his star wattage rise in the last year.

The new sci-fi actioner Repo Men failed to capture any meaningful business in its first weekend with a poor opening of $6.1M. The ultraviolent R-rated pic starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker averaged a wimpy $2,430 for Universal from 2,521 theaters. Critics panned the futuristic film.

Universal found more bad news in fifth place as its other March action title Green Zone tumbled 57% to $6.1M for a weak ten-day total of only $24.9M. The studio did what it could to hide the film's Iraq setting and pushed it instead as a film from the Jason Bourne guys but audiences didn't buy into it. With a production cost of more than $100M, Zone will end up with a domestic take of just $35-40M. The early overseas tally is $20.4M with many markets still to open, but recovering production and marketing costs internationally will also be a challenging task.

Paramount claimed the next two spots with the comedy She's Out of My League which grossed $5.8M and the thriller Shutter Island which took in $4.7M. The R-rated laugher declined by only 41% in its second round and upped its ten-day sum to $19.7M with a $35M final likely - not bad for a low-profile and inexpensive pic that is sure to do even better on DVD. The Scorsese-DiCaprio flick dropped 42% and has banked $115.8M to date.

Avatar spent its 14th weekend in the top ten with $4M, off 38%, and a $736.9M cume. Fox's overseas total climbed to $1.937 billion making the global haul $2.674 billion. Fox Searchlight's Our Family Wedding fell 51% to $3.7M for $13.6M in ten days. Fellow sophomore Remember Me crumbled 60% to $3.3M giving Summit only $13.9M to date. Final grosses will be near the $20M mark for each.

The Bounty Hunter In Theaters This Week 19th March 2010

This weekend, a trio of movies are going to try their luck to knock down Johnny Depp's juggernaut 'Alice In Wonderland'. Sony provides both action and comedy with The Bounty Hunter which features Jennifer Aniston squaring off against Gerard Butler. Fox targets young adolescents with its junior high comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid while Universal busts out the guns with its sci-fi actioner Repo Men.

The Bounty Hunter

Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler), a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter, gets his dream job when he is assigned to track down his bail-jumping ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurly (Jennifer Aniston). He thinks all that's ahead is an easy payday, but when Nicole gives him the slip so she can chase a lead on a murder cover-up, Milo realizes that nothing ever goes simply with him and Nicole. The exes continually one-up each other – until they find themselves on the run for their lives. They thought their promise to love, honor and obey was tough – staying alive is going to be a whole lot tougher. Andy Tennant ("Hitch," "Sweet Home Alabama") directs.

The film is a morality tale set in the near future, when artificial organs can be bought on credit, with the understanding that defaulting on payment will result in a fatal repossession.

The Runaways

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s: The Runaways. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film chronicles Joan and Cherie’s tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out.

Diary of A Wimpy Kid
Copyright © 2010 20th Century Fox

The film is based on the best-selling illustrated novel "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney, the film chronicles the adventures of wisecracking middle school student Greg Heffley over the course of an academic year, as told through the young man's diary and hand-drawn cartoons.

Ninja Assasin (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Warner Brothers / 2009 / 99 Minutes / Rated R
Street Date: March 16, 2010

Genres: Action packed

Starring: Rain
Director: James McTeique

Plot Synopsis: The entertaining, adrenaline-packed Ninja Assassin wastes no time cutting quite literally to the guts and gore of the mysterious world of ninja warriors--the blood flows as freely as champagne on New Year's Eve. Only 3-D might have made it even better. Taken from the streets as a child, the orphan Raizo (Korean pop artist Rain, in his first leading role) is molded into a deadly assassin through methods that might make even the strong of stomach wince. The story flows from present-day Berlin to Raizo's brutal training by the Ozunu, one of the mythical Nine Clans that perform political assassinations around the world. Refusal to follow an order by the clan leader forces Raizo into a life on the run. When Mika (Naomie Harris), a Europol researcher, gets too close to the truth, Raizo risks detection by his former clan-mates to protect her, and to exact his revenge. Fans of ninja films will rejoice in the classic story, while action aficionados will find plenty of heart-pounding thrills in every fight scene. Admittedly, the plot, especially Europol's interest in the mythical clans, exists merely to move the story from one fight scene to the next. But who cares when the action shots--especially the literal firefight at the end--are so exciting.

Disc Features:
  • The Story of the Ninja: Myth, Lore, Training and Combat
  • The Extreme Sport of a Ninja: an elite group of noted freerunners, martial artists and gymnasts brings to life the breathtaking and bloody action
  • Training Rain: transforming a singer/dancer/actor into a powerful ninja
  • 'Clash of the Titans' sneak peek

Did You Hear About the Morgans? [Blu-ray]

Sony Pictures / 2009 / 103 Minutes / Rated PG-13
Street Date: March 16, 2010

Genres: Romantic comedy

Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant
Director: Marc Lawrence

Plot Synopsis: Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker play an estranged husband and wife, both die-hard New Yorkers; while trying to patch things up, they witness a murder and have to go into witness protection in backwater Wyoming. Encounters with bears, bingo, and rodeo clowns ensue. The fish-out-of-water formula is not particularly inspired, but Grant and Parker are well matched; they're both pros who establish an immediate rapport and comfort with each other, making them persuasive as a married couple who haven't fallen out of love. On top of that, the supporting cast is top-notch: Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) as Parker's snippy assistant, Sam Elliott (Thank You for Smoking) as the Wyoming marshal assigned to protect the neurotic couple, and Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard) as the marshal's tough-as-nails wife are only the most recognizable of the solid ensemble playing the quirky characters surrounding the feuding romantic leads. Writer-director Marc Lawrence previously directed Grant to stronger effect in Music & Lyrics and, in particular, Two Weeks Notice, in which Grant and Sandra Bullock proved surprisingly sparky.

Disc Features:
  • Audio Commentary - Director Marc Lawrence is joined by Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker for a deeper discussion about the 'Morgans' production.

  • Location, Location, Location! (HD, 18 min)

  • Cowboys and Cosmopolitans (HD, 8 min) - This is a closer look at the cast and the chemistry between its two leads.

  • Park Avenue Meets the Prairie (HD, 5 min) - Costume designer Christopher Peterson talks about the different fashions of big city versus Midwestern.

  • A Bear of a Scene (HD, 5 min)

  • Deleted Scenes (HD, 4 min)

  • Outtakes (HD, 7 min)

Fox to mine "Avatar" DVD release three times

Twentieth Century Fox on Tuesday set Earth Day, April 22, for the DVD and Blu-ray release of "Avatar". But fans will have to wait until November for another disc with all the usual extras, and even longer for a 3-D version.

Fox said it had chosen Earth Day as "Avatar's" U.S. and Canada home video release, because the film's theme matches the day's goal of environmental awareness.

The April release will be in 2-D and is thought to be one of the first major movies put out in home video format without any of the special features that are normally included, such as deleted scenes, trailers and behind-the-scenes footage.

The studio plans another home video release in November of the "Ultimate Edition" of "Avatar," and that will include extra features, said sources at Fox, a division of News Corp.

A third version, in 3-D, will likely come out next year, they said. By then, more consumers are expected to have 3-D televisions in their homes.

"Avatar" has made a record-breaking $2.64 billion so far at worldwide box offices since its December 18 release, with a large bulk of that coming from 3-D showings.

Sources at Fox said the April disc will come without extra features so that all available storage space can be used for the best picture and sound possible.

"Avatar," which won three Oscars, is about a soldier from an environmentally degraded Earth who is sent to infiltrate a tribe of humanoids aliens living atop a rich mineral deposit on the distant moon Pandora.

The soldier's mission is to find a way to move the tribe so humans can mine the mineral, but he falls in love with a member of the tall, blue Na'vi and leads a revolt against the human colonizers.

Some U.S. conservatives criticized the film, with columnist John Podhoretz of the Weekly Standard faulting it for displaying "hatred of the military and American institutions."

The DVD and Blu-ray disc for "Avatar" will be released in the U.S., Canada and some other countries on April 22. In France, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, it will be available on April 21, and in Japan, Germany and Mexico it will hit stores April 23, with other dates varying by country. 'Alice' Still The Favourite #1 Movie At The Box Office

Moviegoers showed no interest in leaving Johnny Depp's table as the 3D adventure Alice in Wonderland remained at number one at theaters across North America grossing more in its second weekend than all four new releases combined. The Tim Burton-directed pic captured an estimated $62M dropping only 47% in its sophomore frame - a terrific hold for a film coming off of such a colossal opening. After ten days, Disney has hauled in a stunning $208.6M and looks headed for at least $325M with a good chance of topping $350M from the domestic market alone. 3D surcharges have helped but regardless, moviegoers have proven that they will pay extra to see this particular film. 70% of the business to date, or $146M, has come from the 3D screens.

In a mere ten days, Alice has already become the top-grossing pic for the Burton-Depp team beating the $206.5M of 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Next weekend it will surpass the $251.2M of 1989's Batman to become the director's highest-grossing film, but it won't beat the Batpic's roughly 60 million tickets sold. For Depp, Alice will become the highly-paid actor's fourth megahit to smash the $300M level joining his Pirates trilogy.

Audiences this spring have embraced the latest films from the Burton-Depp and Scorsese-DiCaprio teams, but were not as excited for the newest collaboration between Bourne boys Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass. Their political thriller Green Zone opened in second place but grossed an estimated $14.5M from 3,003 locations for a $4,840 average which was decent but not spectacular. The R-rated film about an American Army officer investigating faulty intelligence in Iraq met with mixed reviews and played to an audience of adult men. The $100M-budgeted movie skewed 54% male and 67% 30 and older. A disappointing CinemaScore grade of B- means word-of-mouth is not expected to carry the Universal release very far. The opening was better than the $12.9M bow of Body of Lies starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, but did not match the $17.1M debut of The Kingdom starring Jamie Foxx. All three dealt with U.S. involvement in the Middle East, a topic that remains a hard sell to paying audiences looking for weekend entertainment.

Debuting in third place was the R-rated romantic comedy She's Out of My League which grossed an estimated $9.6M from 2,956 theaters for a weak $3,248 average. Starring Jay Baruchel, the Paramount release targeted older teens and young adults but didn't have much starpower to attract audiences.

Venturing outside of his safe Twilight world, Robert Pattinson disappointed in his first chance at anchoring a film not part of the wildly popular vampire franchise. The romantic drama Remember Me opened in fourth with an estimated $8.3M and averaged only $3,744 from 2,212 playdates. The audience was overwhelmingly made up of young ladies with a whopping 84% of the crowd being female and 53% being under 25. Typical of a film with a teen-girl rush, opening day accounted for the bulk of the business with Saturday falling 20% from Friday's take. Every other film in the top ten saw ticket sales increase on Saturday. Critics were harsh on Remember Me and Twilight fans mostly saved their dollars in anticipation of June's third installment Eclipse.

Shutter Island became the third consecutive $100M hit for the Martin Scorsese-Leonardo DiCaprio machine this weekend. The crime thriller dropped 39% to an estimated $8.1M putting the total at $108M. 2004's The Aviator and 2006's The Departed also joined the century club.

Opening in seventh place was the cross-cultural comedy Our Family Wedding which bowed to an estimated $7.6M from 1,605 sites for a respectable $4,735 average. Fox Searchlight's PG-13 pic stars America Ferrera, Carlos Mencia, and Forest Whitaker and tells the tale of a black groom and Latina bride meeting each other's family. Reviews were dismal.

Avatar, winner of three Oscars, enjoyed the smallest decline in the top ten slipping only 19% to an estimated $6.6M. Fox has amassed a jaw-dropping $730.3M to date and reaching the $750M mark still seems likely. Overture's cop thriller Brooklyn's Finest, on the other hand, suffered the worst fall of any wide release tumbling 68% to an estimated $4.3M in its second weekend. With $21.4M in ten days, the Richard Gere starrer looks to end with $27-29M.
