Hancock Is The Man At No.1 Box Office

Will Smith once again successfully hitting the No.1 spot at the box office with 'Hancock'. With USD$107Million for the opening weekend [inclusive of early openings from Tuesday], compared to my projections of USD$80Million, easily knocking off Wall.E to the No.2 spot with USD$33million [cumulative for 2 weeks now stands at USD$128Million]. - Ibrahem.S

Last week, Will Smith took home yet another gold medal at the box office with his superhero-with-an-attitude actioner Hancock which opened at number one over the Fourth of July holiday weekend nearly doubling the gross of the frame's silver medalist. Sony's critically-panned title collected an estimated $66M over the Friday-to-Sunday period and a solid $107.3M since its launch on Tuesday night with previews beginning at 7pm. The three-day average was a strong $16,646 from 3,965 locations.

Its five-and-a-half-day tally was the fourth biggest opening for the extended Independence Day holiday frame trailing 2004's Spider-Man 2 ($180.1M in six days), last year's Transformers ($155.4M in six-and-a-half days), and 2005's War of the Worlds ($112.7M in six days). Since the holiday falls on a different day each year prompting studios to bow their films in various ways, comparisons are not always fair. But in all three cases, the extended openings accounted for 48-49% of the eventual final domestic gross.

Smith once again proved that he's Hollywood's most bankable box office draw. Hancock was the actor's eighth consecutive number one opener, eighth consecutive film to break the $100M mark, and gave the actor his seventh consecutive year of having a film reach the nine-digit mark. Co-starring Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron, Hancock offers up a new take on the superhero story with a central character that drinks, curses, and roughs up children. The PG-13 film cost a reported $150M and Smith served as producer as well as star. Reviews were overwhelmingly negative but audiences came out anyway generating sales that were far from a record, but still very healthy nonetheless. Bad buzz could make the weeks ahead rocky though.

Hancock's journey began on Tuesday night with $6.8M, Wednesday's official opening day delivered $17.4M, and Thursday added in $17.1M more. The Fourth of July holiday fell on a Friday this year and saw Hancock take in $18.8M. Saturday climbed 39% to $26.1M while Sunday was estimated to dip by 19% to $21.2M. Sony launched the tentpole pic around the world this weekend and hauled in an additional $78M overseas bringing the global opening to a stellar $185.3M over the past week.

Following its top spot debut last week, Disney/Pixar's animated hit WALL•E fell 47% to second with an estimated $33.4M giving the G-rated toon a sturdy $128.1M in ten days. It was a larger than usual decline for a Pixar pic but the Fourth of July holiday falling on a Friday contributed to the slide. The robot adventure opened 34% higher than last summer's Ratatouille which debuted at the same time, but after ten days the lead was cut in half to 17%. Both periods include the Independence Day holiday.

But thanks to strong midweek sales at a time when kids are out of school, WALL•E's ten-day cume is 10% ahead of Cars and 9% ahead of Kung Fu Panda. Both of those animated hits opened in early June. The road ahead will not be an easy one as two more PG-rated family films open this Friday - the Brendan Fraser adventure film Journey to the Center of the Earth and the Eddie Murphy comedy Meet Dave. At its current pace, WALL•E could find its way to $235-245M domestically. [Source from: boxofficeguru.com]

"10,000 BC" Clubs The DVD Competition

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The prehistoric epic "10,000 BC" scored a triple victory on the latest home video charts, topping the national DVD sales and rental charts as well as the Blu-ray Disc sales chart its first week in stores.

Director Roland Emmerich's March release, which cost just over $100 million to make, ended up grossing about $270 million worldwide.

The DVD easily beat "The Spiderwick Chronicles" for the No. 1 slot on the Nielsen VideoScan sales chart for the week ending June 29, racking up about 25 percent more sales than the children's fantasy, which grossed about $160 million worldwide.

The romantic comedy "Definitely, Maybe" debuted at No. 3, followed at No. 4 by "Fool's Gold," the previous week's top seller.

"10,000 BC" also topped Home Media Magazine's video rental chart, generating about 20 percent more activity than second-ranked "Fool's Gold," which was No. 1 the previous week. "Spiderwick" bowed at No. 3, and "Definitely, Maybe" at No. 6.

On the Blu-ray chart, "10,000 BC" easily took the top spot, with second-ranked "Spiderwick" selling just 31% as many copies, according to Nielsen VideoScan data.

Despite critical acclaim, radio humorist Adam Carolla's romantic comedy "The Hammer" failed to make much of a dent on the charts. I debuted at No. 140 on the DVD sales chart, and at No. 60 on the rental chart. [Source from: Reuters/Hollywood Reporter]

Hancock In Theaters This Week 3 July

Sony got off to an early holiday start for its Will Smith superhero actioner Hancock and grossed an estimated $6.8M on Tuesday from special preview showings that began at 7pm across the country in 3,680 theaters. With tomorrow is a public holiday in US for the 4th of July Independence Day, therefore 'Hancock' will create a massive collection for the weekend box office tally. Starring Smith as a chronically hung-over, often-reckless superhero, "Hancock" is expected to give Sony Pictures its first No. 1 release of the lucrative season and gross $70 million to $80 million in its opening weekend. His last movie 'I Am Legend' got USD$77.2million in its' first weekend last year December. Well, probably this one will be getting better with the 'superhero' theme which is more 'family driven'.
My predictions this weekend 1) Hancock USD$80Million

"Hancock" centers on a tortured superhero (Will Smith) who crash-lands in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and tries to transform himself by romancing an alluring housewife, causing chaos in the city.

"Wanted" is hot shot at foreign box office

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Angelina Jolie is the most "Wanted" woman at the foreign box office. Her action thriller, which opened at No. 2 in North America with surprisingly strong weekend sales of $51 million, was the top choice internationally with $32.5 million from 22 territories.

It opened at No. 1 in 18 markets, highlighted by a record-breaking bow in Russia ($11 million), where "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov enjoyed such hits as "Night Watch" and "Day Watch." Other No. 1 openings included Thailand, Ukraine, Turkey and Poland.

The ultra violent adaptation from a series of graphic novels by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones earned $7.6 million in the U.K., second to fellow rookie "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" ($8.1 million).

"Wanted," which will be released around the world during the next three months, will be confronted this coming weekend by Will Smith superhero "Hancock," which is set to open in 49 territories, including the U.K., Germany, Australia, Brazil and Korea.

"Kung Fu Panda" was No. 2 overseas with $23.3 million, followed by "Prince Caspian" ($19.3 million), "Get Smart" ($12.3 million), "The Incredible Hulk" ($11.8 million), "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" ($11.7 million), "Sex and the City" ($11.2 million) and "The Happening" ($7.4 million).

At the same time, new North American champ "WALL-E" teed off promisingly in six Latin American countries to begin a staggered global rollout that ends in Japan on December 5. The cartoon earned $3.1 million, headed by Brazil's $1.4 million.

"Kung Fu Panda" hit the top in Australia with a powerful $6.9 million, and has reached $101.1 million in a little over three sessions of staggered releases in only 14 markets. Top contributors include South Korea ($24.3 million) and Russia ($19.5 million).

In addition to lording over U.K. theaters, "Prince Caspian" ruled in France ($6.1 million). The international total for the domestic disappointment rose to $161.2 million.

Other foreign totals: "Get Smart," $20.5 million; "Sex and the City," $194.3 million; "Indiana Jones," $413.3 million; "The Incredible Hulk," $84.7 million; "The Happening," $69.9 million; "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," $19.4 million; and "What Happens in Vegas," $124.9 million. Godfather Coming to Blu-ray

Making next-gen fans an offer they can't refuse, Paramount is boxing up the entire 'Godfather' trilogy and bringing it to Blu-ray this September with newly-restored elements and hours of bonus material. Due on September 23 (day-and-date with a new standard DVD re-issue), 'The Godfather Trilogy Collection' contains all three installments in the epic saga -- 'The Godfather,' 'The Godfather Part II,' and 'The Godfather Part III' -- each painstakingly restored by the team at Zoetrope Studios in what is being dubbed "The Coppola Restoration." Enjoying a frame-by-frame remaster under the auspices of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and restoration supervisor Kim Aubry, the project reportedly took a year to complete and was recovered using freshly-minted source materials.

Tech specs for each film include a BD-50 dual-layer presentation with 1080p video, and first-ever high-res audio tracks in English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround. (Optional Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish, with 'The Godfather' and 'The Godfather Part II' also including the original English Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono presentation.)

Extras on each of the three individual film discs in the set include audio commentary with director Francis Ford Coppola.

Also included in 'The Godfather Collection' is a bonus fourth disc with hours of extensive bonus material (much of it presented in full HD video). Among the supplemental content is a suite of five featurettes ("Godfather World," "The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn't," "...Then the Shooting Stopped," "Emulsional Rescue-Revealing The Godfather," "The Godfather on the Red Carpet"), a quartet of "Short Films on The Godfather" ("The Godfather vs. The Godfather, Part II," "Cannoli," "Riffing on the Riffing," "Clemenza"), a multi-part "Behind the Scenes" documentary ("The Godfather Family: A Look Inside," "On Location," "Francis Coppola's Notebook," "The Music of the Godfather," "Coppola & Puzo on Screenwriting," "Gordon Willis on Cinematography"), additional vignettes on "The Filmmakers" ("Francis Ford Coppola," "Mario Puzo," "Gordon Willis," "Dean Tavoularis," "Nino Rota," "Carmine Coppola"), storyboards, additional scenes, an "Acclaim & Response" marketing and publicity section, a "Crime Organization Chart," two still galleries, and theatrical trailers.

Though Paramount and Zoetrope plan to make the three 'Godfather' films available as standalone DVD releases, the studio has confirmed that at this date, only the 'The Godfather Collection' box set will be made available on Blu-ray. Suggested list price has been set at $119.95
