"Bangkok Dangerous" kicks off fall movie season

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The fall box-office season gets off to a rather sedate start this weekend, with just one film opening in wide release -- Lionsgate's "Bangkok Dangerous," starring Nicolas Cage and going out without advance screenings for the press.

A spokeswoman for Lionsgate said that as an action release, "Bangkok" was never going to be a critical darling. But the studio representative stressed that Lionsgate has high opening-weekend expectations for the film.

Tracking data appears to indicate a bow somewhere north of $10 million, which means that "Bangkok" should top the weekend's box-office rankings.

DreamWorks/Paramount's R-rated comedy "Tropic Thunder" turned in a three-peat performance atop the domestic box office last weekend with $14.6 million during the four-day holiday frame. But even a 15 percent drop from the $11.5 million that "Tropic" fetched last Friday through Sunday would give the leggy comedy a gross slightly less than $10 million this session and finally yield the weekend crown.

Focus Features' "Hamlet 2" also bears watching this weekend, not because it has a chance of topping the box office but to see if the well-reviewed comedy can salvage a decent theatrical run despite its wobbly expansion into wide release last weekend.

The Steve Coogan/Catherine Keener-starring film grossed just $2.1 million from 1,597 playdates for an inauspicious theater average of $1,331. But arguably, the holiday weekend's four films opening in wide release left little room to maneuver, so Focus will hope that "Hamlet" can find its sea legs this session.

TRUSTING IN 'TRAITOR'

The Overture thriller "The Traitor" turned in the best per-theater average last weekend, and fingers are crossed at the fledgling indie that its Don Cheadle-starring thriller -- Overture's first release of a self-produced film -- will build on that opening-weekend performance with a gutsy second session.

"Traitor" grossed $10 million from 2,054 theaters, or $4,872 per venue, last weekend.

The remake of a 1999 Thai film of the same name, "Bangkok" was helmed by the original movie's directors, Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang.

"We're expecting a solid opening, and we're well positioned to play through the entire month," Lionsgate distribution president Steve Rothenberg said.

Lionsgate dominated the fall box office in 2007, with its $209 million in autumn revenue and 16 percent market share topping the seasonal grosses of all of the major studios. This time, the mini-major enters the fall with its second release in a string of wide openers that Lionsgate will unspool over five consecutive weekends.

The first film in that spree of releases -- Labor Day-weekend debutante "Disaster Movie" -- opened weakly with $6.9 million during its first four days. Next up will be "Tyler Perry's the Family That Preys," set to unspool September 12.

Although the film is likely to appeal primarily to Perry's urban base of support, executives hope the casting of Kathy Bates in a key role might expand the multihyphenate draw. [Source from: Reuters/Hollywood Reporter]

Ledger voted top summer movie villain

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Heath Ledger's chilling portrayal of the Joker in Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" easily surpassed rivals to be named the summer's best movie villain in a poll released on Wednesday.

Australian actor Ledger, 28, who died of an accidental drug overdose six months before the July release of "The Dark Knight", won 95 percent of votes in a poll by AOL's Moviefone.com Web site.

The Batman sequel, which has taken $505 million at the U.S. and Canadian box office alone, also won every category in which it was nominated for the end of summer season poll, including best sequel, best superhero movie, best action sequence and "movie most worth your cash."

"'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' had all the hype going into the summer but when people saw 'The Dark Knight', they really responded in 'Titanic'-like proportions," said Moviefone editor Scott Robson.

"Indiana Jones" -- the much-anticipated fourth movie in the lucrative franchise -- got only five percent of votes for best movie in the Moviefone end of summer movie poll. The poll got a total of 646,917 online votes.

"Sex and the City" edged out "Mamma Mia" as best chick flick, while "Tropic Thunder" beat "Pineapple Express" 32 percent to 24 percent as the funniest comedy.

Summer was no fun, however, for comic actors Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers.

Murphy's "Meet Dave" came top of the "least worth your cash" category with 33 percent of votes, closely followed by Myers' vehicle "The Love Guru".

"When you think what these guys were 10 years ago and you look at these two movies, you feel like the wheels have come off their careers," said Robson.

It was the opposite story for Robert Downey Jr, who hit a career rock bottom in the early 2000s because of drug addiction.

The actor won the "hottest summer leading man" and "best combined performance" category in the poll for his back-to-back roles as the superhero in "Iron Man" and for playing a black actor in "Tropic Thunder."

"It shows that film fans can be a very forgiving lot as long as you put something great on screen," Robson said. [Source from: reuters.com]

Transformers On Blu-ray 2nd Sept.Release

Transformers (2007) (Blu-ray)

Paramount Home Entertainment / 2007 / 143 Minutes / Rated PG-13
Street Date: September 02, 2008

Overall Grade 4.5 out of 5 Highly recommended

Genre: Sci-fi action-thriller, Comic-based adaptation

Starring: Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox, Jon Voight, and Hugo Weaving
Director: Michael Bay

Disc Features:

Disc One:

  • Audio Commentary - Things kick off with a solo screen-specific commentary from Michael Bay. Although he has a reputation as an arrogant, obnoxious guy (hardly the type of person you'd want to spend 143 minutes with), I have to say that the director really won me over with this consistently engaging track. Granted, he bounces all over the place, starting on one aspect, interrupting it with another (whether it is to make fun of Shia LeBeouf's "mangy" hair or John Turturro's underwear), and then veering off on yet another, but somehow he manages to keep it all together, tackling everything from the getting that first call from executive producer Steven Spielberg, to the CGI advancements required to bring the film's robots to life, to staging the ridiculous amounts of action. Simply put, this is a great commentary.

Disc Two:

  • Documentary: "Our World" (HD, 51 minutes) - We begin with "The Story Sparks" (9 minutes), which proved to be my fave of the bunch. As you might expect, Bay, Steven Spielberg and all of the main cast and crew appear by way of interviews, but what's cool here is that we also take a trip to Hasbro's headquarters to get a look back at the history of the original Transformers toy line and cartoon series. There is some hilarious vintage footage of old commercials, plus reactions from the fervent Transformers fan community. This one reminds us that 'Transformers' truly was a highly-anticipated "event," and that like any high-profile comic book movie, the die-hard fans had their knives out and sharpened for Bay and his collaborators to fail.

The content gets a bit more traditional with the next three segments. "Human Allies" (13 minutes) introduces us to the main characters, including their casting, and relative thoughts on tackling a movie about toys. There are also some funny thoughts on "Bayham," i.e., the director's legendary on-set enthusiasm.

"I Fight Giant Robots" (14 minutes) focuses on the military aspects of the movie, including Bay's insistence on receiving cooperation from the Army to ensure that the movie would be accurate (or as accurate as possible considering the nature of the story).

Finally, "Battleground" (14 minutes) is an extension of this, with extensive on-set footage that illustrates how intense filming such gargantuan action sequences can be. It's surprising just how many of the stunts were live-action and not CGI -- and damn is that Optimus Prime truck scary.

  • Documentary: "Their War" (HD, 5 minutes) - The second documentary focuses on the Autobots and the Decepticons. "Rise of the Robots" (14 minutes) looks at the big decisions that had to be made -- which robots, what they would look like, and how to deflect the inevitable fan backlash in reaction to the changes that needed to be made in bringing iconic characters to the big screen.

Next, we have "Autobots Roll Out" (20 minutes) and "Decepticons Strike" (14 minutes). We learn here that 'Transformers' forced new advancements in the art of CGI rendering -- apparently the multitude of working parts of the robots and the need to create photo-realistic textures proved to be an incredibly complex undertaking.

Finally, rounding out the documentary material is "Inside the Allspark" (17 minutes), which goes into even more minute detail on the various CGI elements -- animatics, renderings, surface texture, light sources, etc. I wished for a bit more of a genuine wrap-up to the whole doc here, but this one certainly tells you just about everything you need to know about creating a CGI robot.

  • From Script to Sand: "The Skorponok Desert Attack" (HD, 9 minutes) - Rounding out the main video extras is a straightforward dissection of said effects scene. It's exactly how it sounds, with script excerpts compared to rough and final film footage.

  • Still Gallery: "Concepts" (HD, 2 minutes) - A pithy montage of stills, this was the only section of the supplements that left me underwhelmed. With all of its various robots, a movie like 'Transformers' really cries out for extensive concept art and various renderings, not just a few meager pics.

  • Theatrical Trailers (HD) - Finally, we get two theatrical trailers and a teaser for 'Transformers.' (Note there are also hidden easter eggs featuring a third trailer, plus a spot for 'Iron Man.')

Married Life (Blu-ray)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / 2008 / 90 Minutes / Rated PG-13
Street Date: September 02, 2008

Genres: Drama, comedy

Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Patricia Clarkson, Rachel McAdams

Plot Synopsis: A strong blend of suspense, star-crossed romance and wry comedy of manners, Married Life is an unconventional human drama about the irresistible power and utter madness of love. Harry (Chris Cooper) decides he must kill his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson) because he loves her too much to let her suffer when he leaves her. Harry and his much younger girlfriend Kay (Rachel McAdams) are head over heels in love but his best friend Richard (Pierce Brosnan) wants to win Kay for himself. As Harry implements his awkward plan for murdering his wife, the other characters are occupied with their own deceptions. Like Harry, they are overwhelmed by their passions, but still struggle to avoid hurting others. Married Life is an uncommonly adult film that surprises and confounds expectations. While it plays with mystery and intrigue, its ultimate concern is: What is Married Life? In its sly way, Married Life poses perceptive questions about the seasonal discontents and unforeseen joys of of all long-term relationships.

Disc Features:
  • Audio Commentary - Director Ira Sachs goes solo on this track. He's a thorough and well-researched speaker, however, so the pace never lags. He concentrates largely on the story and thematic elements, and speaks extensively of his cast (no surprise, he raves about them). Sachs is also nothing if not slavish in his devotion to his influences, and name-checks about every director of prominence over the past several years. Sachs rounds out his track by talking about the test screenings the film underwent (which resulted in, amongst other changes, different endings) plus some of his own personal history, including a spy novel he wrote which wound up influencing the movie. I didn't expect to enjoy this multi-layered commentary as much as I did, so if you at all appreciate the film, this track is well worth checking out.

  • Alternate Endings (SD, 19 minutes) - There are three here, and though they all begin relatively the same way, the tone and outcome is quite different. One is exceptionally dark, one more upbeat, and the other right down the middle. Though I generally liked the ending of the completed theatrical cut, these three alternates are intriguing in how they're capable of quite radically altering our perception of what has come before. Video is presented in 480i/MPEG-2, and Sachs provides optional commentary for all three endings.

'Tropic Thunder' Retain The #1 Spot For 3rd Week Box Office

Still ahead of the pack for a third time, Tropic Thunder grossed an estimated $14.3M over the four-day Friday-to-Monday holiday weekend and lifted its impressive total to $86.6M after 18 days of release. The Ben Stiller-directed war comedy saw its three-day take of $11.5M drop only 29% from last weekend and joined the Batman juggernaut as this year's only films to rank number one for three or more weekends. The $90M DreamWorks production is on course to end its run in the vicinity of $110M for Paramount which coincidentally also kicked off the summer blockbuster season at the top in May with Iron Man.

Leading all new releases, but lacking muscle, was Vin Diesel's return to the action genre with Babylon A.D. which bowed to an estimated $12M over the long holiday weekend. Fox's latest clunker enjoyed the widest launch by far among debuting titles but generated a lackluster $3,540 average over four days from 3,390 theaters. During the Friday-to-Sunday portion, the R-rated thriller grossed $9.6M for a weak $2,822 average. Babylon A.D. capped off a summer that the studio would like to forget following such misfires as Meet Dave, The Rocker, and The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Some were not costly films and others Fox just distributed for a fee, but the studio still failed to score a $100M+ summer grosser for the first time in eleven years.

The comic book overachiever The Dark Knight smashed through the $500M mark and placed third in its seventh weekend with an estimated $11M. Warner Bros. bumped its stunning cume up to $504.7M and surpassed the quintuple century barrier on Sunday in its 45th day of release. The new Batman epic has now sold approximately 70 million tickets beating out Spider-Man which snapped up roughly 69 million stubs in 2002. Knight is on a trajectory to end its North American run with about $525M translating to around 74 million admissions. Overseas, The Joker's antics attracted an estimated $19.2M boosting the international total to $417M and the global gross to an eye-popping $921.7M. That was enough for The Dark Knight to break into the all-time top ten list of worldwide blockbusters. Shattering the $1 billion mark is a virtual guarantee.

Sony's sorority comedy The House Bunny ranked fourth for the weekend with an estimated $10.2M over four days in its second term. The Anna Faris starrer has grossed a solid $29.8M in 11 days and could finish in the neighborhood of $45M. The budget was only $25M.

Overture Films saw a respectable debut for its Don Cheadle political thriller Traitor which bowed to an estimated $10M over the long weekend and $11.5M in the six days since opening on Wednesday. The PG-13 pic landed in 2,054 theaters and averaged a good $4,869 over four days representing the second best average among films in wide release. Reviews were somewhat positive.

Jason Statham's latest action offering Death Race fell to sixth grossing an estimated $8.2M over the long weekend pushing the 11-day total to $25M. The $45M Universal release should end up with $35-40M.

Moviegoers finally said no to spoof kings Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg as their newest comedy Disaster Movie flopped taking in an estimated $6.9M over four days. Opening in 2,642 locations, the PG-13 pic averaged a weak $2,604 for Lionsgate. Disaster's three-day bow of $5.8M was less than one-third of what the filmmakers saw on opening weekend for their most recent hits Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie which both debuted at number one with respective takes of $18.5M and $18.6M.

Two hit comedies followed. Universal's musical sensation Mamma Mia! sang to the tune of $5.8M, according to estimates, and raised its cume to $132.9M. The studio released a new sing-along version in selected theaters on Friday which helped give sales a boost over the holiday weekend. A final domestic tally of $140-145M could result for the $65M songfest. Sony's stoner hit Pineapple Express collected an estimated $4.5M and took its sum to $80.9M. The final gross for the $27M production should reach $85-90M. [Source from: boxofficeguru.com]
