Freddy's Return With A Bang At Box Office



Notes: Iron Man 2 hasn't released yet in the US last week. It will only release this Friday.

Proving once again that he's not dead, Freddy Krueger returned to the top of the North American box office chart with his ninth cinematic outing in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street which drew a solid opening. But the overall marketplace was still in a late-spring funk with the Top 20 failing to reach $100M for the second consecutive frame. However, the rebound is just a week away as this summer's kick-off picture Iron Man 2 made a loud entrance overseas grossing over $100M this weekend from international territories ahead of its domestic launch on Thursday night.

New Line Cinema's iconic horror franchise came back to life thanks to the top spot debut of the new version of A Nightmare on Elm Street which bowed to an impressive $32.9M, according to final studio figures, to score the sixth best April opening in history. Scaring audiences in 3,332 theaters, the R-rated redo averaged $9,875 per location and was extremely front-loaded over the course of the weekend. Friday launched with a stellar $15.8M including Thursday night midnight shows. Saturday tumbled 33% to $10.6M while Sunday dropped another 38% to $6.5M. Horror films, especially remakes and sequels, tend to attract their biggest crowd on opening day and then suffer sizable declines.

Nightmare's debut fell below the $40.6M bow of last spring's fright remake Friday the 13th, but beat out the $28.1M opening of 2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre redo. All three were produced by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes which has cornered the market in this field. The new Freddy beat out the debuts of many other recent fright remakes like Halloween ($26.4M), My Bloody Valentine ($21.2M), and Prom Night ($20.8M).

While Freddy Krueger held a tight grip on domestic multiplexes, Tony Stark seized control of the rest of the world with Paramount and Marvel's international launch of Iron Man 2 which grossed a sensational $100.2M from 6,764 theaters in 53 markets around the world since its first debuts on Wednesday in certain territories. Leading the way were the United Kingdom with $12.2M from 528 sites, Korea with $10.8M from 855, Australia's $8.8M from 251, and France's $8.2M from 722. IMAX also set a new record for an overseas 2D opening grossing $2.25M from 48 large-format screens for a sizzling $47,000 average beating the old high of $2.1M set by Transformers 2 last summer.

Iron Man 2 opens next week in several more countries like China, India, Turkey, and Germany and will fly into more than 4,000 theaters across North America. Paramount had previously slated the Jon Favreau-directed sequel to open this very weekend but when Disney pulled The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader out of its May 7 date, Paramount pushed its tentpole back a week domestically. The Mouse House later dropped out of the Narnia business with Fox stepping in to release Dawn Treader this December 10 in 3D.

The Viking toon How To Train Your Dragon dropped out of the number one spot again but declined by only 31% to $10.6M boosting the cume for the 3D blockbuster to $192.2M. Look for the DreamWorks Animation-Paramount title to break the $200M mark next weekend. Last summer's Up from Pixar and Disney is the only other 3D animated film to ever cross the double-century barrier.

A pair of female-skewing comedies followed. Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey enjoyed the smallest dip among all wide releases dropping only 28% to $7.6M for a sturdy $73.6M total to date for Fox. The Jennifer Lopez pic The Back-up Plan fared well in its second weekend sliding a moderate 41% to $7.3M. With $23M in ten days, CBS Films should end up with a decent $40M or so.

Opening in fifth place with dismal results was the family comedy Furry Vengeance starring Brendan Fraser which grossed $6.6M. Averaging a poor $2,211 from 2,997 locations (an unusually high playdate count for a film that has always had little to no buzz), the PG-rated film about forest animals seeking revenge on a real estate developer trying to build on their land played mostly to kids and moms. Though in its sixth weekend of play, Dragon proved to be a much stronger draw for families despite the higher 3D ticket prices so Furry suffered from both lack of consumer interest plus formidable competition.

Warner Bros. claimed the next two spots. The action thriller The Losers grossed $5.9M in its second mission dropping only 37%. But with only $18M in ten days and Stark Industries set to monopolize the action crowd starting this Thursday night at midnight, an underwhelming $30-35M final seems set. Clash of the Titans fell by 34% to $5.9M for a $153.9M tally thus far. Like most high-profile 3D films, Clash has been displaying good legs later into its run.

Plot Synopsis: It's delightful to see Meryl Streep come into her own as a romantic comedian in her later career years--after all the accolades, the Oscars, the serious-as-marble dramatic roles. Streep is in fact a true cutup, as she has demonstrated in films like Mamma Mia and Julie & Julia--and she gets the guy. So if Nancy Meyers's It's Complicated is perhaps a bit facile in the plot department, it's saved by a splendid romp of a performance by Streep (as Jane), along with her two leading men, Alec Baldwin (Jane's ex-husband, Jake) and Steve Martin (her supposed boyfriend, Adam). Meyers, as she did in Something's Gotta Give and Baby Boom, turns notions of over-the-hilldom--at least for women--on their ear. Streep's Jane is a contented, affluent divorcée with excellent taste in furnishings, happily about to preside over an empty nest and feeling just fine about it. Who should bump into, and ruin, this perfect solitude but Jane's ex, Jake, played to a pompous (and hilarious) fare-thee-well by Baldwin. "Turns out I'm a bit of a slut," chirps the sexually awakened Jane. The beauty of It's Complicated is that it really isn't all that complicated--its chemistry depends on the wonderful actors (including the supporting cast of John Krasinski, Lake Bell, Mary Kay Place, and Rita Wilson) and the oft-forgotten reality that people over 25 can have great sex, and fall head over heels.

Dragon Retakes #1 Over Sluggish Weekend

With Hollywood dumping its weakest films into theaters, moviegoers understandably stayed away from the multiplexes as the North American box office slumped to its lowest level of the year. New releases The Back-up Plan and The Losers generated unimpressive results allowing the five-week old 3D cartoon How to Train Your Dragon to reclaim the number one spot thanks to its continued durability. For the first time all year the top ten films failed to gross at least $90M.

After coming within a hair of nabbing the box office crown last weekend, How To Train Your Dragon won a decisive victory this time grossing $15.4M in its fifth weekend for another slim decline of only 22%, according to final studio figures. The DreamWorks blockbuster has now amassed a fantastic $178.3M and should bust through the $200M mark the same weekend as when Paramount stablemate Iron Man 2 arrives to kick off the summer movie season. The Viking toon is still on course to finish its run in the neighborhood of $225M which would be more than five times its opening weekend take thanks to amazing legs. Dragon's drops to date have been 34%, 14%, 21%, and 22%.

Fans didn't exactly turn out in large numbers for Jennifer Lopez who returned to theaters with her first major wide release in five years. Her pregnancy comedy The Back-up Plan collected $12.2M from a very wide 3,280 locations for a lackluster $3,720 average. Slammed by poor reviews, the PG-13 film about a woman who finds Mr. Right after being impregnated artificially played mostly to adult women, and failed to appeal to a broader audience. Females made up 71% of the audience, 57% were over 30, and 21% were Latino, according to distributor CBS Films. This is only the company's second release following the disastrous Brendan Fraser-Harrison Ford flop Extraordinary Measures which debuted to a terrible $6M and $2,363 average in January.

Lopez has generally been a reliable draw at the box office with her films and the opening of Plan does not necessarily mean she no longer has box office clout any more. The generic story, lack of additional starpower, and poor marks from critics all helped to prevent an opening like those of her past films. The last major Lopez vehicle was 2005's Monster-in-Law which bowed at number one with $23.1M in May, a month usually topped by big-budget action films each weekend.

Audiences made Date Night the number three choice again this weekend as the Steve Carell-Tina Fey comedy slipped just 37% to $10.5M. Fox has laughed up a solid $63.3M in 17 days and could be headed for the $90M mark.

Opening in fourth with weak results was the action film The Losers with $9.4M from 2,936 locations for a poor $3,204 average. The Warner Bros. release featuring Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan didn't have the starpower to pull in paying audiences and the story involving a group of renegade ex-soldiers seeking revenge on a criminal mastermind failed to spark any interest. Reviews were mixed for the PG-13 pic.

Kick-Ass stumbled in its second weekend falling 53% to $9.3M giving the super hero flick $34.7M in ten days. Lionsgate should end up with roughly $55M from its much-buzzed-about action film. The 3D action pic Clash of the Titans grossed $8.9M, off 42%, pushing the total for Warner Bros. up to $145.6M. Sony's comedy remake Death at a Funeral tumbled 51% in its second weekend to $8M. With $28.5M in ten days, the Chris Rock-Martin Lawrence film should finish its run with $45-50M.

Disney's new underwater documentary Oceans scored the best per-theater average of any film in wide release this weekend. The G-rated pic debuted in moderate national release with 1,206 locations and grossed $6.1M for a $5,024 average. Add in grosses from the Thursday opening on Earth Day when it ranked number one in the marketplace and the four-day cume stands at $8.5M. On a per-theater basis, the bow was almost identical to the studio's doc from this same frame last year when Earth bowed to $8.8M from a wider debut in 1,804 sites for a $4,892 average.

The Mouse House rounded out the top ten with a pair of hits. The Miley Cyrus teen romance The Last Song dropped 37% to $3.8M for a $55.5M total to date. Alice in Wonderland, the biggest non-Pandora 3D movie of all-time, fell 38% to $2.3M boosting the total to $327.5M.

Losers In Theaters This Week 23rd April 2010

The late-April dumping ground is upon us as Hollywood releases a batch of films unlikely to set the box office on fire. Lovers of guns and explosions have the action film The Losers to test out while those who like love stories can reunite with Jennifer Lopez who returns to cinemas after an extended break with the romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan. Meanwhile, fans of the sea have the new documentary Oceans releasing in conjunction with Earth Day. After narrowly accomplishing the feat last week, How To Train Your Dragon will once again try to recapture the top spot.

An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, "The Losers" centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission.
