Blu-ray 5th April Releases

Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Disney/Buena Vista / 2010 / Unrated
Street Date: April 05, 2011

Genres: Action, Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller

Starring: Michael Sheen, Olivia Wilde, Jeff Bridges
Director: Joseph Kosinski

Plot Synopsis: The luminescent lines and shimmering surfaces of Tron: Legacy will tantalize anyone who's lusted after the latest smartphone. The long-ago disappearance of his computer-genius father has left Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund, Four Brothers) with existential ennui and a lot of money. When he discovers his father's secret workshop, he gets sucked into a computerized realm ruled by a megalomaniac computer program named Clu--who just happens to be his father's virtual doppelganger. To find his real father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from the original Tron, with a bit of his role from The Big Lebowski thrown in for kicks), Sam has to fight in gladiatorial games, drive in digital demolition derbies, and be stripped and dressed by slinky pneumatic babes. For all the techno-babble and quasi-philosophy the characters spout, this is a movie without an idea in its shiny head. It would be pointless to describe the many sillinesses because Tron: Legacy isn't actually trying to be smart; it's trying to look cool. It succeeds. Olivia Wilde (House) looks like the coolest action figure ever (if the entire movie could be nothing but the shot of her lounging on a futuristic sofa, it would be a masterpiece of avant-garde gizmo-fetishism). The facemasks are cool, the glowing skintight outfits are cool, the light-cycles are really, really cool--and let's be honest, it's all about the light-cycles. That's what the audience for Tron wants, and that's what Tron: Legacy delivers.

  • Little Fockers (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

    Universal / 2010 / 98 Minutes / Rated PG-13
    Street Date: April 05, 2011

    Genres: Comedy, family
    Starring:
Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller
    Director: Paul Weitz

    Plot Synopsis:
Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro return as the comic duo of a hapless, eager-to-please son-in-law and an overbearing father-in-law in Little Fockers. Despite the title, there's not much of the kids in this sequel; like Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, Little Fockers is all about the tension-fraught relationship between crusty ex-CIA agent Jack Byrnes (De Niro) and male nurse Greg Focker (Stiller). This time, Jack has decided that Greg just might have what it takes to replace him as the protector and guide to the family, if he can provide for and properly educate the children. From there it's a series of scenes in which Greg tries to meet Jack's expectations and fails spectacularly, this time complicated by the presence of sexy pharmaceuticals rep Andi (Jessica Alba), who hires Greg to represent an erectile dysfunction drug and gives him a bag of samples… which leads pretty much where you think it might lead. This time around, the jokes are broader (the movie starts with projectile vomiting and ends with a fistfight in a bouncy castle) and the plot is even less important, but the cast (including Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Owen Wilson, and Teri Polo) executes everything with professional skill. Fans of the previous movies will enjoy this latest installment.

Hop Is Hoping For Long Run At No.1 Box Office

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - New box office champ "Hop" delivers plenty of wit, verve and surreal mayhem to entice even the post-adolescent crowd into this jolly (and strangely Christmas-like) Easter egg hunt.
Easter movies have never had the same cache at the box office as Christmas movies but Universal and the minds behind "Despicable Me" -- meaning Chris Meledandri's Illumination Entertainment -- want to change all that in a skip, jump and "Hop." Imaginatively combining live action with digital animation, "Hop" delivers a story that slyly borrows from Santa Claus mythology as well as Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
While director Tim Hill, who helmed "Alvin and the Chipmunks," skewers things toward children, there is plenty of wit, verve and surreal mayhem to entice the post-adolescent crowd into this Easter egg hunt. Besides any movie about the hare apparent to the Easter Bunny throne arriving in Los Angeles and going immediately to the Playboy Mansion -- a logical mistake if you think about it -- can't be strictly for children. The Universal release opened at No. 1 in North America with a better than expected estimated weekend haul of $38.1 million.
The screenplay by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio ("Horton Hears a Who!") along with Brian Lynch imagines an Easter much like Christmas. The Easter Bunny (Santa) sets out from a candy factory (toy factory) on Easter Island (the North Pole) to deliver sugary treats (gifts) to children all over the world. Well, the Easter Bunny hasn't quite cracked China but that's another story.
The story starts out with two families thoroughly dissatisfied with their sons. These would be the O'Hare Family that is wearying of the lay-about propensities of slacker son Fred (James Marsden of Enchanted) and the Easter Bunny (voiced by a rather jolly Hugh Laurie) whose son E.B. (a hilarious Russell Brand) wants to be a drummer rather than the Easter Bunny. And not just any drummer but the best rabbit drummer in the world -- a goal he has a more than decent shot of achieving.
So faster than you can wiggle a cottontail, E.B. runs away from his destiny, plunges down a rabbit hole -- these guys will steal from anywhere -- and lands in Hollywood looking for a record contract. As his first gig is with the Blind Boys of Alabama, who aren't absolutely sure about the species of their new drummer, things go okay for E.B. at first. (You get the drift of the film's sense of humor?)
E.B. and Fred become a reluctant team with E.B., whose ability to talk (much less play the drums) has Fred wondering whether he's asleep or awake, moving into a hillside mansion Fred is house sitting. E.B. lands a spot on a talent search TV show while Fred ... well, Fred develops a curious and never quite explained ambition to become the Easter Bunny himself.
There is a Hellzapoppin', anything-goes sensibility at work here where gags, personalities and cultural references fly every which way but the discipline behind the animation merged with live action is top-notch. Best of all -- no, second best of all, as we'll get to what's best here in a minute -- is the cast. Where to start? Brand was born to be a slacker Easter Bunny (among other things), Marsden is more animated than many of the animated characters and if you want someone to play the Easter Bunny's right-hand chick with a Latin American accent, the one who ferments a palace coup, look no further than the always uproarious Hank Azaria.
Let's not leave out the Pink Berets -- ninja bunnies who go searching for the wayward E.B. -- or David Hasselhoff as the host of a star-search reality show.
Okay, Hop lets down with a sappy ending that isn't quite as smart as the rest of the movie. But you cut it some slack since getting there is so much fun. Oh yes, and now here is the promised best thing about the movie: It isn't in 3D! [Source from: reuters.com]

    Blu-ray 28th March Releases

    Tangled (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

    Disney/Buena Vista / 2010 / 100 Minutes / Rated PG
    Street Date: March 29, 2011

    Genres: Animation, family
    Starring:
    Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi

    Plot Synopsis:
Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, Tangled is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The movie focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a skillet multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. Tangled is a masterful blend of humor, adventure, passion, and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The Real 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't really be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating.

Diary of A Whimpy Kid 2 Rules Box Office

Last weekend, family comedy "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" outmuscled adventure "Sucker Punch" to claim the North American weekend box office title with $24.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
"Wimpy Kid," based on the successful books about a boy in middle school, easily toppled "Sucker Punch," a fantasy tale of young women who can escape their dark lives by retreating into a dreamworld where they battle rivals. It claimed the No. 2 spot on movie charts with $19 million.
"Sucker Punch" and "Wimpy Kid" were the only new major releases in theaters over the weekend, and had been widely expected to compete for No. 1. "Sucker Punch" started out strong on Friday, but families hitting theaters on Saturday helped lift up the "Wimpy Kid."
Rounding out the top 3 at $15.2 million was thriller "Limitless," starring Bradley Cooper as a man who takes a drug that increases his brain capacity.
In its second weekend of release, "Limitless" ticket sales fell only 19 percent from one week ago when it claimed the No. 1 spot. Similarly, thriller "The Lincoln Lawyer" saw only a 17 percent drop and turned in $11 million to stay at No. 4.
Typically, movies may see their ticket sales fall anywhere from 40 percent to 50 percent or more from one weekend to the next, and a slight decline shows both films are enjoying success with moviegoers.
"Limitless" has received 67 percent positive reviews from critics polled by Rottentomatoes.com, and "Lincoln Lawyer" has scored well with 81 percent of reviewers. By contrast, "Sucker Punch" is seeing 80 percent of its critiques in the not-so-good category, according to the website that compiles criticism.
Meanwhile, animated kids comedy "Rango," fell from No. 2 last week to No. 5 with $9.8 million. It now has claimed $106.4 million after four weeks in theaters.
"Wimpy Kid" was released by 20th Century Fox film studio, a unit of News Corp. "Sucker Punch" was distributed by Warner Bros. movie studio, part of Time Warner Inc, and "Limitless" was released by privately held Relativity Media. "The Lincoln Lawyer" was released by Lions Gate and Rango by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. [Source from: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/27/us-boxoffice-idUSTRE72Q1UT20110327]

    The Tourist (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

    Sony / 2010 / 103 Minutes / Rated PG-13
    Street Date: March 22, 2011

    Genres: Thriller, suspense, espionage
    Starring:
    Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie
    Director:  Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

    Plot Synopsis:
Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie use their star power to help propel The Tourist to its ultimate, satisfying destination. It just takes a little while to get there. Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) sets a leisurely pace for The Tourist, which lets the film be equal parts mystery, romance, thriller, and comedy. But because of its lush cinematography and location-based shooting, The Tourist is perhaps first and foremost a valentine to the city of Venice. Jolie plays Elise, an international woman of mystery, somehow caught up with a glamorous thief who's double-crossed a gangster, Shaw (Steven Berkoff, splendidly menacing). On a train from Paris to Venice, Elise meets Frank (Depp), a schlumpy math teacher from Wisconsin on holiday. Before the train hits Venice, poor Frank has become entangled in a dangerous web that he can't begin to understand. As the plot unfolds, a group of stone-headed thugs dashes after Frank and Elise, darting through canals, across tile rooftops, and into some of the most beautiful hotel rooms in the world. The cinematography of John Seale and the score by James Newton Howard set an immersive tone. Depp and Jolie do a respectable job with their roles, though perhaps because of the mysteries in the plot, as a couple, Elise and Frank lack a certain oomph. But the supporting actors, including Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton, and Rufus Sewell, are uniformly excellent, and the story (based on the French film Anthony Zimmer) wraps up nicely. Yet the true star of The Tourist is enchanting Venice--and anyone dreaming of a romantic getaway will not want to miss this trip.

'Limitless' Limits Its Box Office Crown Earnings.

Last weekend, the paranoia-fueled action thriller Limitless led a trio of new releases and opened at number one with a sturdy debut. The crime drama The Lincoln Lawyer and the road comedy Paul both attracted respectable business landing in the top five but the overall marketplace once again failed to match up to last year's levels.
Relativity Media's new distribution operation scored its first top spot bow with the Bradley Cooper drama Limitless which premiered on top with $18.9M, according to final studio figures, finishing a few notches above industry expectations. The fast-paced thriller about a washed up writer who finds wealth and success after taking a top-secret drug that unleashes the full power of his brain averaged a solid $6,860 from 2,756 theaters and played well to adults of both genders. Produced for $30M, the PG-13 film marked the first hit for Cooper as a leading man after numerous wins at the box office in ensemble pics, most notably 2009's sleeper smash The Hangover. Robert De Niro co-starred.
Audience research showed that cross-gender appeal was strong as females only slightly outnumbered males with 52% of the crowd. 60% was 25 and over while 57% was non-Caucasian. Despite heavy competition for adults right now, Limitless connected with its target audience thanks to an effective marketing push that included a high-profile TV spot during the Super Bowl over a month ago.
Holding steady in second place in its third weekend of play was Johnny Depp's animated comedy Rango which slipped only 33% to $15.1M. After 17 days the Paramount release has tallied an impressive $92.3M and will break nine digits by the end of the week becoming the bankable actor's sixth $100M+ hit over the last eight years.
Depp and Cooper will again face each other over Memorial Day weekend when The Hangover II opens against the second session of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The debut of Kung Fu Panda 2 over the sequel-filled holiday will put Paramount in the mix too with another toon.
With three new male-led films entering the marketplace, the military actioner Battle: Los Angeles took a huge hit tumbling 59% to $14.5M for third place. Produced for $70M, the Sony release has amassed an impressive $60.5M in its first ten days and looks headed for the $80-90M range.
Matthew McConaughey's courtroom drama The Lincoln Lawyer opened to respectable results in fourth with $13.2M playing to an older adult audience. Lionsgate's R-rated pic averaged $4,879 from 2,707 theaters and was well-liked by critics which helped its chances at the box office given its older skew. Ryan Phillippe, Marisa Tomei, and William H. Macy also were part of the cast. The distributor won some industry press with its promotion with discount finder Groupon which allowed users to buy tickets for only $6. For the sake of box office reporting, Lionsgate used full ticket values and not the actual discounted price paid by consumers.
The alien comedy Paul debuted close behind in fifth with $13M from 2,802 sites for a decent $4,655 average. Starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost of Shaun of the Dead fame, the R-rated road picture also featured Seth Rogen voicing the title character. Studio research showed that the audience was 56% male and 58% 25 and older. Reviews were generally positive. Universal began the global release a month ago with its United Kingdom bow and has grossed $28.1M overseas so far.
The fairy tale remake Red Riding Hood fell 49% to $7.2M in its second weekend giving Warner Bros. $25.9M in ten days. A final total of around $40M seems likely. Matt Damon's The Adjustment Bureau followed with $5.8M, off 50%, putting Universal at $48.6M to date.
After a weak opening, the 3D toon Mars Needs Moms enjoyed a good sophomore hold slipping only 23% to $5.3M thanks to no new competition. But the Disney film stands at just $15.4M after ten days and looks set to end its run with only $30M.
Off only 36% in ninth was the teen drama Beastly with $3.2M followed by the raunchy flick Hall Pass with $2.6M dropping 49%. Totals are $22.2M for the CBS Films pic and $39.6M for the Warner Bros. comedy.
In limited release, Fox Searchlight debuted the critically acclaimed Paul Giamatti comedy Win Win in just five theaters and grossed $150,362 for a strong $30,072 average. Focus expanded its period drama Jane Eyre from four to 26 locations and delivered $466,409 for a sturdy $17,939 average. The total stands at $719,514.
