"High School Musical 3" set for Halloween honors

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Once more with feeling?

Friday night's trick-or-treating could tie up a few prospective movie patrons, but it's hard to see how "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" can be kept from repeating atop the weekend box office in North America. A 50% drop would see the Disney hit fetch $21 million this session, and it's unlikely either of the frame's wide openers will top that.

The Weinstein Co.'s R-rated comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" seems to be tracking well enough in prerelease surveys of prospective patrons to produce an opening in the teen millions. But it appears Freestyle Releasing's PG-13 horror film "The Haunting of Molly Hartley" could be hurt enough by Halloween diversions that even a $10 million opening proves out of reach.

Meantime, Lionsgate's "Saw V" is likely to drop at least a bit further than 50 percent from last weekend's $30 million debut. The R-rated sequel still could grab second place during its sophomore session -- depending on how "Zack and Miri" performs.

"We're very optimistic," Weinstein Co. distribution boss Steve Bunnell said of opening prospects for the raunch-and-romance comedy. "We have very strong awareness, even in the competitive landscape."

Directed by Kevin Smith, "Zack and Miri" stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as cash-strapped platonic friends who decide to, well, make a porno. Executives hope cast talk-show stumping will help boost their film's opening haul. But though Rogen, Banks and Smith have been embraced by distinct fan bases, it's questionable whether any of the trio can deliver an audience based on their individual renown.

"Molly" appears to be the most disadvantaged by the holiday's costumed diversions, but Freestyle chief Mark Borde said he has his fingers crossed that the Halloween hex won't hit the horror film too severely.

"That's all we've been talking about," Borde said. "About a third of the camp says it won't have any effect, a third says it will have a good effect, and a third says it will hurt us. I think we might get a little stung on Friday, (but) we're praying for a little rain and cold."

"Molly" stars Haley Bennett ("College") in the title role.

Elsewhere this session, Universal expands Clint Eastwood's Angelina Jolie starrer "Changeling" to almost 1,900 locations, a week after it enjoyed a strong bow on 15 screens in nine markets. The drama will likely finish ahead of "Molly" on the weekend chart. Warner Bros. also sets Guy Ritchie's platforming "RocknRolla," to a barely wide 825 playdates, which could help the gangster release rumble with "Molly" for the next rung in the rankings.

The "Changeling" expansion bears particularly close watching -- for how the film is received by critics at the cusp of awards season and for how its box office performance bears on prospects for another Eastwood film. Warners recently slotted the Eastwood-helmed and -toplined drama "Gran Torino" for a limited bow December 17. [Source from: Reuters/Hollywood Reporter]

DVD/ Blu-ray Chart 25th October

The home video charts were painted green last week as Universal's "The Incredible Hulk" debuted at No. 1 on all three charts.

The summer theatrical hit -- a kinder, gentler remake of the 1970s TV series than Ang Lee's 2003 version -- bumped the previous week's winner, Paramount's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," to the No. 2 position on all three charts.

"Hulk," which earned $134.5 million domestically, handily took the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ending Oct. 26, selling more than four times as many copies as the next-highest-ranked debutante, "The Strangers," also from Universal, which bowed at No. 3.

"Hulk" also topped Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week ending Oct. 26, though in rental stores it only generated about twice as many transactions as did "Strangers," which also bowed at No. 3.

"Hulk" scored its third win on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart.

Four weeks after its release, Paramount's "Iron Man" maintained an iron-fisted hold on the charts. The summer blockbuster -- like "Hulk," based on a Marvel Comics character -- finished the week as the No. 4 seller and renter, while on Blu-ray it held fast at No. 3, one notch higher than "Strangers." It remains the top-selling DVD of the year.

The Polar Express Presented in 3-D [Blu-ray]
(Blu-ray)

Warner Home Video / 2004 / 100 Minutes / Rated G
Street Date: October 28, 2008

Genres: Animated, Family, Holiday

Starring: Tom Hanks
Director: Robert Zemeckis

Plot Synopsis: Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book, and those who felt that the innovative use of "performance capture"--to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters--was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story's epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it's a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal "star" who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it's the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wonders on display, it's clear that The Polar Express represents a significant milestone in the digital revolution of cinema. If it also fills you with the joy of Christmas (in spite of its Nuremberg-like rally of frantic elves), so much the better.

Disc Features:
• Deleted Song: "Smokey and Steamer Song"
• Featurettes: "You Look Familiar: The many Polar faces of Tom Hanks," "True Inspirations: Profiling author Chris Van Allsburg

HD Exclusive Content:
• 2-D and 3-D Versions

Genres: Comedy, Family, Holiday

Starring: Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel, Peter Dinklage
Director: Jon Favreau

Plot Synopsis: Will Ferrell with training wheels. The rambunctious comedian gives a funny, half-throttle performance as Buddy, a human raised by the elves at the North Pole. This good-spirited holiday comedy was directed by Jon Favreau, with nary a wannabe mobster or a swinger in sight. Even when Buddy comes to New York City, the movie is happy and chipper, with plenty of homages to Christmas movies past. The best scenes are a montage with Ferrell elfing around on the city streets, and his showdown with Peter Dinklage, in at least his third role as a touchy dwarf.

Disc Features:
• Audio commentary with Will Ferrell and Director Jon Favreau
• Elf Focus Points
• Elf Karaoke
• Interactive Game: "Buddy's Adventure Game"

HSM3 Soars to Dazzling $42M Opening

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In one of the more unusual duels at the North American box office, a perky Disney romantic musical trumped the fifth installment in the grisly "Saw" horror series, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

"High School Musical 3: Senior Year," the first big-screen adaptation of Walt Disney Co's popular TV movie franchise, sold $42 million worth of tickets during its first three days. The opening sets a new record for a musical, surpassing the $27.8 million bow of the ABBA-themed romance "Mamma Mia!" in July.

"Saw V" followed with $30.5 million, in line with the previous three installments. Moviegoers can expect additional sequels of both films.

The one-two punch of the disparate duo propelled overall weekend sales to their highest level in 10 weeks. The top 12 films grossed $120 million, according to tracking firm Media By Numbers, up about 40 percent from both last weekend and the year-ago weekend.

But the news was not all good. The new cop drama "Pride and Glory," starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrell, opened at No. 5 with just $6.3 million. It marks the second consecutive dud for Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. following "Body of Lies," starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio, two weeks ago.

Disney, on the other hand, is enjoying a strong fall, first with "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" three weeks ago, and now with "High School Musical 3." The movie also opened in 19 international markets, and was No. 1 in each of them, led by Britain with $13 million. [Source from: reuters.com]

Harrison Ford Voted Best Movie President: Poll

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A president who can kickstart the U.S. economy may be favored by American voters this election season, but if left to movie fans voting in an online poll, a president who can kick butt would do better in the White House.

Harrison Ford, who played a U.S. president fighting airplane hijackers in 1997's "Air Force One" topped a list of fictional movie presidents people would most like to lead the U.S., according to a poll released on Thursday by AOL's Moviefone.com Web site.

Ford took 24 percent of the votes versus 16 percent for No. 2 Morgan Freeman, playing a president who must save mankind from a comet heading for Earth in "Deep Impact" (1998).

"It seems everybody is looking for a commander-in-chief who can come in and take command," said Moviefone editor-in-chief Scott Robson. "Our readers voted with their hearts at a time when you have the economy going down the tubes, but in an ideal world it would be great to have a president who can kick some ass."

Freeman is one of a handful of African-Americans to play a U.S. president onscreen, putting Hollywood well ahead of Barack Obama's historic 2008 White House bid.

"I don't know if Obama can say Morgan Freeman paved the way, but it hasn't hurt," said Robson.

Michael Douglas, who played a widowed president looking for love in "The American President" (1995), was No. 3 with 15 percent of votes and Bill Pullman, who thwarted aliens in "Independence Day" (1996), followed with 12 percent.

The poll ran on Moviefone.com from Sept 23-October 21 and attracted more than 1.1 million votes.

The top 10 movie presidents who Americans would vote into office in real life according to the poll are;

1. Harrison Ford - "Air Force One" (1997)

2. Morgan Freeman - "Deep Impact" (1998)

3. Michael Douglas - "The American President (1995)

4. Bill Pullman - "Independence Day" (1996)

5. Kevin Kline - "Dave" (1993)

6. Dennis Quaid - "American Dreamz" (2006)

7. Bruce Greenwood - "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" (2003).

8. James Cromwell - "The Sum of All Fears (2002).

9. Jack Nicholson - "Mars Attacks" (1996)

10. Jeff Bridges - "The Contender" (2000).
