Toy Story 3 Still Tops, While Tom Cruise Flops!

Adam Sandler and Tom Cruise hit the multiplexes with their newest summer offerings, but neither was able to topple the 3D animated smash Toy Story 3 which topped the North American box office for a second frame in a row. Sandler won the runner-up spot with a strong debut for his latest comedy Grown Ups while Cruise struggled with his action-comedy Knight and Day which posted only moderate results in third place.

Disney and Pixar easily held onto the box office crown for a second straight weekend as Toy Story 3 captured $59.3M in ticket sales in its sophomore frame, according to final studio figures. The 3D toon's drop of 46% was large, but was still the second lowest of any film in the top ten. The cume to date rose to a stellar $226.9M after just ten days, the best start ever for any Pixar film. With kids out of school for summer vacation and the busy Fourth of July holiday coming up, Toy Story 3 may just surge to the $400M mark making it the one to beat this year for all other blockbusters.

The animation studio's last film Up, also a 3D pic with extra high ticket prices, soared to $137.2M in its first ten days which accounted for 47% of the eventual $293M domestic total. Ten-day shares for previous June releases from Pixar include 57% for WALL•E , 53% for Ratatouille, and 48% for Cars. For WALL•E and Ratatouille, Independence Day holiday business fell within the first ten days leading to the higher shares. Later this week, Toy Story 3 will surpass the $245.8M of Toy Story 2 and later will fly past the $339.7M of Finding Nemo to become Pixar's top grosser ever, but is unlikely to match the fish flick's 56 million tickets sold.

Adam Sandler returned to his safe zone and landed the fourth best opening of his career with the broad comedy Grown Ups which bowed to $40.5M. Sony released the PG-13 pic in 3,534 locations and averaged a strong $11,462 per site. The reunion laugher co-starring Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Salma Hayek opened almost exactly like some previous Sandler films that featured little to no extra starpower. The comedian's only bigger debuts were $47.6M for 2005's The Longest Yard, $42.2M for 2003's Anger Management, and $41.5M for Big Daddy which sold about 50% more tickets when it opened this very weekend eleven years ago.

As usual, reviews were terrible for Grown Ups. However these Sandler vehicles are not made to impress critics, but to give moviegoers interested in low-brow humor a few chuckles as they escape the aggravations of everyday life. Budgeted at under $80M, the film skewed younger and more female despite being centered around men approaching middle age. Studio research showed that 53% of the crowd was female and 52% was under 25. Sandler saw his impressive streak of seven consecutive years with $100M+ blockbusters come to an end last year with his Judd Apatow project Funny People which bombed grossing just $51.9M overall. The funnyman's summer comedies usually end up tripling their opening weekend figures so Grown Ups should have no problem reaching nine-digit territory.

Coming in third for the weekend were Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz who pulled in $20.1M for their new secret agent pic Knight and Day. The Fox release averaged a decent but not stellar $6,501 per theater from 3,098 playdates. Since its Wednesday launch, the PG-13 film has grossed $27.4M. Despite today's higher ticket prices, Knight delivered the second lowest opening for Cruise over the last decade faring better than only the $6.7M of 2007's Lions For Lambs.

Given that it returned Hollywood's former most bankable star to the type of action hero role audiences have always liked, and that it boasted additional starpower from the well-liked Diaz who can do action and comedy with the greatest of ease, the turnout was soft. Reviews were mixed but generally not too bad. Still, audience excitement was never too high for this movie. Fox is hoping that good word-of-mouth will carry the film forward since Knight is not a sequel or a franchise pic so it was never expected to have huge upfront demand. The $100M+ budgeted film may have been hurt by following a string of star-driven action-comedies like Killers, The A-Team, Date Night, and The Bounty Hunter. A bad title didn't help either.

Sony's hit remake The Karate Kid fell 48% in its third round taking in $15.5M. The Jaden Smith fight flick has banked an impressive $135.8M and could be headed for the $175M mark beating the $162.6M of the young actor's debut film The Pursuit of Happyness opposite his father Will Smith.

The A-Team fell 57% in its third weekend to $6.2M pushing its 17-day tally to a mediocre $63M for Fox. Universal's comedy Get Him to the Greek grossed $3.1M, off 49%, raising Universal's cume to $54.6M. Close behind with $3.1M as well was the 3D sequel Shrek Forever After which dropped 45% for a $229.5M total.

Down 49%, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time took in $2.8M and lifted its domestic tally to $86.2M. The assassin comedy Killers followed in ninth place with $1.9M, down a troubling 62%, giving Lionsgate $43.9M to date. The Warner Bros. megaflop Jonah Hex collapsed by 70% grossing $1.6M for a lousy $9.2M in ten days.

Blu-ray 22nd June Releases

Green Zone (2-Disc Limited Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

Universal Studios / 2010 / 115 Minutes / Unrated
Street Date: June 22, 2010

Overall Grade 4 out of 5 Highly recommended

Genres: Action, thriller

Starring: Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Brendan Gleeson, Amy Ryan
Director: Paul Greengrass (Bourne Ultimatum)

Plot Synopsis: Matt Damon reteams with his Bourne Supremacy director to create a thriller grounded in contemporary politics: the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) travels across war-torn Iraq, pursuing the intelligence he's been given, but every site indicated comes up empty of WMDs. Investigating the source of the intelligence, he finds himself caught between CIA agent Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson, 28 Days Later) and politician Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear, Little Miss Sunshine) over the identity of "Magellan," the supposed source. As Miller tracks down an Iraqi general, he ends up further and further afield, facing danger from all sides. It's hard to say which is the greater accomplishment--that Green Zone manages to turn a still-volatile political issue into a propulsive action movie, or that it manages to depict Iraqi people as individuals with a wide range of responses to what's happened to their country. Damon's performance is low-key but effective as Miller tries to maintain some semblance of moral clarity in a circumstance that muddies everything. Also featuring Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) as a compromised journalist and Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner) as an Iraqi civilian who gets dragged into far more than he expected.

Disc Features:
  • Commentary with Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon

  • Deleted Scenes (HD, 12:27)

  • Matt Damon: Man of Action (HD, 9:47)

  • Inside Green Zone (HD, 8:53)

She's Out of My League [Blu-ray]

Paramount / 2010 / 104 Minutes / Rated R
Street Date: June 22, 2010

Overall Grade 3.5 out of 5 Recommended

Genres: Comedy, romance

Starring: Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve
Director: Jim Field Smith

Plot Synopsis: A gorgeous girl takes an interest in an ordinary guy in She's Out of My League, only to find their relationship questioned, criticized, and outright scoffed at by their friends and families. When airport security guard Kirk (Jay Baruchel, best known from supporting roles in Knocked Up and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) recovers the cell phone of knockout Molly (Alice Eve, Crossing Over), she asks him out to a hockey game as thanks. When a romance blossoms, Kirk is amazed--but not half as amazed as his buddies, who explain at length why Kirk is inferior in every way to this "perfect girl." This emphasis on the social ripples of the romance separates She's Out of My League from the usual average-guy-beautiful-girl romance; the web of admiration, envy, insecurity, and social anxiety is the real topic of the movie, not bland morals like "love is blind" or "true beauty is within." Well, that and a lot of embarrassing comic bits involving shaving, premature ejaculation, and more--some bits wouldn't be out of place in There's Something About Mary. It's not a great movie (Molly's role is underdeveloped, though not as badly here as in most boy-centered sex comedies), but Baruchel's puppy-dog charm, the better-than-average dialogue, and a strong supporting cast (particularly T.J. Miller, Cloverfield, and Krysten Ritter, Confessions of a Shopaholic) lift She's Out of My League above the ordinary.

Disc Features:
  • Audio Commentary (HD, 18 min.)

  • Devon's Dating Show (HD, 7 min.)

  • Blooper Reel (HD, 6 min.)

  • Deleted Scenes (HD, 4 min.)

Tyler didn't think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through until the day he met Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate. Love was the last thing on his mind, but as her spirit unexpectedly heals and inspires him, he begins to fall for her. Through their love, he begins to find happiness and meaning in his life. The Last Station [Blu-ray]

Sony Pictures Classics / 2009 / 112 Minutes / Rated R
Street Date: June 22, 2010

Genres: Drama

Starring: Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti, Anne-Marie Duff, Kerry Condon, James McAvoy
Director: Michael Hoffman

Plot Synopsis:

After almost fifty years of marriage, the Countess Sofya (Helen Mirren), Leo Tolstoy's (Christopher Plummer) devoted wife, passionate lover, muse and secretary—she's copied out War and Peace six times...by hand!—suddenly finds her entire world turned upside down. In the name of his newly created religion, the great Russian novelist has renounced his noble title, his property and even his family in favor of poverty, vegetarianism and even celibacy. After she's born him thirteen children!

When Sofya then discovers that Tolstoy's trusted disciple, Chertkov (Paul Giamatti)—whom she despises—may have secretly convinced her husband to sign a new will, leaving the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his very own family, she is consumed by righteous outrage. This is the last straw. Using every bit of cunning, every trick of seduction in her considerable arsenal, she fights fiercely for what she believes is rightfully hers. The more extreme her behavior becomes, however, the more easily Chertkov is able to persuade Tolstoy of the damage she will do to his glorious legacy.

Into this minefield wanders Tolstoy's worshipful new assistant, the young, gullible Valentin (James McAvoy). In no time, he becomes a pawn, first of the scheming Chertkov and then of the wounded, vengeful Sofya as each plots to undermine the other's gains. Complicating Valentin's life even further is the overwhelming passion he feels for the beautiful, spirited Masha (Kerry Condon), a free thinking adherent of Tolstoy's new religion whose unconventional attitudes about sex and love both compel and confuse him. Infatuated with Tolstoy's notions of ideal love, but mystified by the Tolstoys' rich and turbulent marriage, Valentin is ill equipped to deal with the complications of love in the real world.

Toy Story 3 Scores Big On The 1st Week!

As what I've predicted last week, Pixar once again showed off its box office muscle with the record opening for Toy Story 3 which delivered the best debut in company history. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the comic book-inspired Jonah Hex was shot dead on arrival suffering one of the worst openings ever for a summer action film. The overall marketplace bounced back after a few sluggish weeks with the top ten reaching a stellar $184M - the second best performance of 2010 including holiday frames.

Disney and Pixar scored their eleventh consecutive hit with Toy Story 3 which bowed at number one with a staggering $109M, according to estimates. The G-rated reteaming of Woody the Cowboy, Buzz Lightyear, and other memorable characters generated a red hot $27,061 from 4,028 theaters helped by higher 3D ticket prices. It was the second biggest opening ever for a 3D film after Alice in Wonderland's $116.1M from March and the second highest for an animated film trailing Shrek the Third's $121.6M from 2007. Woody and Buzz also tied the $109M opening of last summer's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for number ten on the list of all-time biggest debuts and number one on the list of best June premieres.

Critics were all raves for Toy Story 3 which was not surprising since Pixar films hardly ever attract bad reviews. The animation studio's previous best debut was $70.5M for 2004's The Incredibles which translates to about $85M at today's 2D prices. Last summer's Up was Pixar's first 3D entry and bowed to $68.1M but Story's built-in audience helped to bring out a larger audience on opening weekend.

Toy Story 3 launched on Friday with a stunning $41M ranking as the largest opening day ever for an animated film. The CinemaScore grade was an encouraging A. Surprisingly, Saturday sales actually dropped 10% to $37M. Family films tend to jump up on Saturdays but Friday was bigger for Toy due to so many schools being out for the summer and the nature of sequels attracting more demand upfront. Plus, the Friday gross included healthy midnight sales from Thursday night. Shrek Forever After, another recent 3D toon that was a sequel, enjoyed a solid 39% bump on its first Saturday, however schools were all in session in mid-May.

The road ahead is still expected to be a bright one for Toy Story 3 thanks to amazing reviews, strong word-of-mouth, and more schools closing for the summer everyday this week. The Independence Day holiday session is not too far away either and will lead to continued strength into July.

After a surprisingly strong opening weekend, Sony's hit remake The Karate Kid fell 48% to an estimated $29M and broke the $100M mark after just ten days of release. The decline was not bad considering the competition for families that Toy Story gave. Total stands at $106.3M to date with the Jaden Smith vehicle possibly heading for the neighborhood of $175M. That would be some Father's Day gift to producer-dad Will Smith beating many of his own blockbusters like I, Robot, Shark Tale, and the Bad Boys films.

The A-Team dropped a moderate 46% to an estimated $13.8M in its second weekend boosting its ten-day total to $49.8M. Fox's 80s nostalgia trip looks to end its run with $80-90M. Universal's rock star comedy Get Him to the Greek held up well in its third frame with an estimated $6.1M, off 39%, for a $47.9M cume.

Four films snuggled into the tight $5M to $5.5M range according to estimates from their distributors. Final grosses to be reported on Monday could see a change in the rankings. With Buzz Lightyear taking away the 3D toon audience, Shrek Forever After tumbled 65% to an estimated $5.5M bumping its total to $223M. A final gross of $230-235M seems likely. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time enjoyed a remarkably impressive hold dipping only 19% to an estimated $5.3M giving Disney $80.5M to date. Killers followed with an estimated $5.1M, down 36%, for a $39.4M sum for Lionsgate.

Eighth place saw the debut of the year's biggest disaster, Jonah Hex. The PG-13 comic adaptation grossed a microscopic $5.1M from 2,825 theaters for a puny $1,800 average. The Warner Bros. release generated no interest with moviegoers and won over no fans with critics either. Even the reliable comic book crowd stayed away from this one. Starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich, Hex never caught on as a must-see film with audiences and was not based on material with much of a built-in fan base. Rolling the dice with films based on Iron Man, Green Lantern, and Thor make some kind of sense, but nobody asked for a Jonah Hex movie. The turnout was even worse than for Fox's last film Jennifer's Body which bowed to $6.9M in the weak month of September. The only good news for Hex is that the film didn't cost too much. Its reported production budget was about $40M.

Toy Story 3 Is Ready To Break The 2010 Box Office Records

With its bulletproof track record, Pixar returns with a sequel to its only sequel - Toy Story 3. It should have no problem breaking the opening weekend record for the company which is still held by 2004's The Incredibles with $70.5M. My prediction Toy Story 3 will score $90 - $100M mark this weekend, considering most of the moviegoer will watch it in 3D cineplex. While Karate Kid should finish 2nd this weekend as the critics are so positive and has 'a very good word of mouth' from the audiences as well. Jonah Hex, sorry to say, for me it might be a kind of disasterous flop...hrmmm hard to say. Let's see how it goes Monday. - Ibrahem.S

Toy Story 3 welcomes Woody (voice of Tom Hanks), Buzz (voice of Tim Allen) and the whole gang back to the big screen as Andy prepares to depart for college and his loyal toys find themselves in... day care! These untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice, so it's all for one and one for all as plans for the great escape get underway. A few new faces-some plastic, some plush-join the adventure, including iconic swinging bachelor and Barbie's counterpart Ken (voice of Michael Keaton), a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants (voice of Timothy Dalton) and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear (voice of Ned Beatty). Directed by Lee Unkrich, produced by Pixar veteran Darla K. Anderson, and written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt, Toy Story 3 is a comical new adventure in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D.

Jonah Hex

Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone...and anything. Having survived death, Jonah's violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the "other side." His only human connection is with Lila (Megan Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. Jonah's past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military makes him an offer he can't refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop the dangerous terrorist Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich). But Turnbull, who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell, is also Jonah's oldest enemy and will stop at nothing until Jonah is dead. Based on the legendary character from the graphic novels, "Jonah Hex" is an epic adventure thriller about one man's personal quest for redemption against the vast canvas of the battle between good and evil.
