"Avatar", Chipmunks Lead Worldwide Box Office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The 3-D extravaganza "Avatar" ruled the worldwide box office for a second weekend on Sunday, while the latest exploits of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Sherlock Holmes helped set a North American sales record.

"Avatar," an eco-friendly morality tale from "Titanic" writer/director James Cameron, earned $220 million in North America and 108 foreign markets, taking its 10-day haul to $617.3 million.

Distributor 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp, said the film was No. 1 everywhere except in India where it followed a local movie. It opens in China on January 2 and Italy on January 15.

British director Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes," starring Robert Downey Jr. as the Victorian sleuth, opened to $91.4 million in North America and 17 foreign markets. The Warner Bros. release opened at No. 2 in the United States and Canada with a better-than-expected $65.4 million.

Family audiences spent $86.7 million on Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," a follow-up to the cartoon characters' 2007 worldwide smash. In North America, the film ranked No. 3 for the weekend with $50.2 million, also exceeding studio forecasts. Thanks to an early start on Wednesday, its tally stands at $77.1 million, taking its worldwide haul to $113.6 million.

Fox said "Alvin" opened in 42 markets, and was No. 2 in at least 20 of them.

SALES RECORD SMASHED

The three films helped set a new weekend sales record in North America, according to tracking firm Hollywood.com Box Office. The top 12 releases grossed $278 million, smashing the mark of $261 million set in July 2008 when "The Dark Knight" was the top film, it said.

The firm also forecast record sales of $10.5 billion this year, up 9 percent from 2008. Even with higher ticket prices, it predicted the number of tickets sold would rise almost 5 percent from last year to 1.4 billion -- the highest tally since 2006.

The other major new release in North America, "It's Complicated," opened at No. 4 with a solid $22.1 million. The Universal Pictures comedy, starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, also pulled in $5.4 million from 11 foreign markets. Spain chipped in $2.1 million.

The only sour note was struck by the Weinstein Co. musical "Nine," which earned just $5.5 million in its first weekend of wide release, good enough for only No. 8. The closely held studio said the film struggled to connect with moviegoers in the heartland, but did better in the big cities.

STRONG HOLD FOR "AVATAR"

"Avatar" has earned $212.3 million after 10 days of release across the United States and Canada. The film enjoyed a surprisingly strong hold, losing just 3 percent of its opening-weekend audience.

It garnered almost as much attention for its reported record-breaking budget of at least $300 million as for its tale of a disabled ex-Marine sent from Earth to infiltrate an alien race of 10-foot (3 meter)-tall blue people in order to save his polluted planet.

"Sherlock Holmes" looks set to give Downey his second movie franchise after "Iron Man." It ranks as the fifth-biggest December opener in North America, and it set a Christmas Day opening record of $24.8 million.

Warner Bros. is talking about sequel prospects but no decisions have been made yet, said Dan Fellman, president of distribution at the Time Warner Inc unit. Downey reinvents the staid Holmes as a dashing superhero; Jude Law co-stars as Watson.

The "Alvin and the Chipmunks" sequel ranks No. 7 among all-time December openings in North America. "Alvin" and "It's Complicated" come from female directors, Betty Thomas and Nancy Meyers, respectively, a rare appearance by two women in the top tier.

The No. 5 spot went to "Up in the Air," which rose three places in its first weekend of wide release. Director Jason Reitman's meditation on love and loneliness in corporate America has earned $24.5 million since Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures released it in 15 theaters on December 4. Writer/director Nancy Meyers ("What Women Want," "Something's Gotta Give," "The Holiday") directs Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin in "It's Complicated," a comedy about love, divorce and everything in between.

Jane (Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has—after a decade of divorce—an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin). But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable—an affair. With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell), Jane is now, of all things, the other woman.

Caught in the middle of their renewed romance is Adam (Martin), an architect hired to remodel Jane's kitchen. Healing from a divorce of his own, Adam starts to fall for Jane, but soon realizes he's become part of a love triangle.

Should Jane and Jake move on with their lives, or is love truly lovelier the second time around? It's... complicated.

James Cameron Back at #1 with Avatar

Last weekend, director James Cameron's new movie "Avatar," considered one of the most expensive movies ever made, on Monday saw its initial weekend ticket sales raised to $77 million in the United States and Canada.

The movie's box office performance has been widely watched given its cost. Sunday's initial estimates showed ticket sales at $73 million in the U.S. and Canada and $159 million elsewhere for global ticket sales of $232 million.

Box office watchers said a weekend snowstorm that buried cities from Washington to Boston hurt ticket sales along the U.S. East Coast. But as final figures were tallied, the blizzard was slightly less of an issue than first believed.

"Avatar," which mixes live action and animation, paints a picture of a lush planet in outer space and tells of a man sent there to infiltrate an alien race of blue people.

Film studio 20th Century Fox has said it spent $237 million to make the movie, but some newspaper reports have estimated it cost at least $300 million. The studio had said it would spend another $150 million to market the film.

Despite its solid opening, "Avatar" did not set records. The top worldwide total for a weekend debut is $394 million for July's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." The best U.S. and Canadian initial weekend is $158 million for the 2008 Batman movie "The Dark Knight."

Movie Fans Ready to Blast Off with Avatar

This weekend audiences will buckle up and take a 3D trip to Pandora as James Cameron returns to the multiplexes with his first film in a dozen years with the much-anticipated sci-fi actioner Avatar which will have no trouble dominating the global box office. Hoping to pick up a few crumbs is Sony with its counter-programming entry Did You Hear About the Morgans?, a new romantic comedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. The overall marketplace is sure to blast past year-ago numbers thanks to the tree-loving blue aliens setting the stage for a robust end-of-year sprint.

Following four weeks of female-skewing movies topping the charts, the boys get their revenge with Avatar which marks the Oscar-winning director's first film since 1997's record-setting Titanic and first sci-fi flick since 1991's Terminator 2. Demand is sky high for this ground-breaking 3D adventure film set in the year 2154. Males will outnumber females, but the PG-13 film's event status should lead to broad interest initially. While not giving away specifics, Fox has what could be the most expensive movie ever made with a production cost estimated to be in the range of $300M much like the third Pirates of the Caribbean pic. Marketing, of course, adds a ton more.

    Avatar

"Avatar," a live action film with a new generation of special effects, takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads an epic battle to save a civilization. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of "Titanic," first conceived the film years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, "Avatar" delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

The story's hero is Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. Bitter and disillusioned, he's still a warrior at heart. All Jake ever wanted was something worth fighting for, and he finds it in the place he least expected: on a distant world. Jake has been recruited to join an expedition to the moon Pandora, which corporate interests are strip-mining for a mineral worth $20 billion per kilogram on Earth. To facilitate their work, the humans use a link system that projects a person's consciousness into a hybrid of humans and Pandora's indigenous humanoids, the Na'vi. This human-Na'vi hybrid – a fully living, breathing body that resembles the Na'vi but possesses the individual human's thoughts, feelings and personality – is known as an "avatar."

In his new avatar form, Jake can once again walk. His mission is to interact with and infiltrate the Na'vi with the hope of enlisting their help – or at least their acquiescence – in mining the ore. A beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, albeit reluctantly, because even in his avatar body, Jake represents to her the human encroachment on the Na'vi's unspoiled world.

As Jake's relationship with Neytiri deepens, along with his respect for the Na'vi, he faces the ultimate test as he leads an epic conflict that will decide nothing less than the fate of an entire world.
