Mika: Live In Cartoon Motion

Mika's offering, Live In Cartoon Motion, captures the star at his show stopping best, thrilling a sold-out audience of 4,000 fans at France's famed L'Olympia venue. Mika's Live In Cartoon Motion marks the first time the energetic star's lively show has been filmed in its entirety. Directed by Matt Askem (David Bowie, Paul Weller,) it captures Mika's flamboyant stage presence, with the star performing most of the songs from his 3 million selling worldwide debut album Life In Cartoon Motion, including "Relax, Take It Easy," "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)," and the global chart-topping "Grace Kelly." Using 10 cameras and shot in high definition, the DVD also features a documentary chronicling Mika's escapades throughout his much heralded world tour, a highly-raved-about romp that the caused San Francisco Chronicle to proclaim the star "an incredible showman." Nominated for two MTV Europe Music Awards earlier this week, the tireless star will tour Europe this fall, returning to his native England for a series of live shows in late November and early December.

U2 - PopMart Live from Mexico City

U2's PopMart Live from Mexico City is released on DVD for the first time on September 18th in two formats, a Special Limited Edition 2-DVD Deluxe Packaging version and a single disc, Standard version. Described as a sci-fi disco supermarket, the PopMart Tour opened in its "spiritual home", Las Vegas on April 25, 1997. All trash and kitsch, PopMart introduced a giant mirrorball lemon, a 100 foot cocktail stick - complete with olive, and the works of Lichtenstein, Warhol and Haring, to a live rock audience: a production experience never quite seen before. Filmed at the Foro Sol Autodromo in Mexico City on December 3, 1997, PopMart Live from Mexico City was directed by David Mallet and first released on video the following year. Both the video and audio have been digitally remastered and the DVD includes a brand new 5.1 surround mix in DTS and Dolby Digital of the concert. The single disc, Standard version will contain only the concert material and the Special Limited Edition 2-DVD version will feature on the 2nd bonus disc, nine previously unreleased live audio and video tracks, four documentaries, a PopMart tour visuals montage, and DVD-ROM extras.

Adventures of Mimi Exclusive 2 DVD Set

During the Glitter and Charmbracelet eras, a comeback from Mariah Carey seemed impossible to some. Her popularity, her quality of material, and even her voice appeared to be degrading at a painfully rapid rate. Even I, an avid fan of the songbird, began to think that she was on her way out of the music business. In early 2005, "It's Like That" was released, and although it was a nice track and the fans enjoyed it, it still wasn't making any big moves on the charts to make anyone think this new upcoming album would perform any differently than the past two. Then, out of nowhere came the mega-hit, "We Belong Together," and the rest was history. The Emancipation of Mimi went on to be certified six times platinum by the RIAA, making it the best selling album of 2005. At the 2006 Grammy Awards, it was named the best contemporary R&B album of the year. The album also gave Carey two more #1 singles to boast. This tour, which is her most successful one yet, topped it all off.

I actually was fortunate enough to see this tour in my area, and I must say that this DVD does an excellent job of capturing the magic of her performance. The set is nice, as is the lighting. The concert was recorded in HD and is in surround sound, so obviously I have no complaints in that area. (The only problem I really have with the way it was shot is that I really didn't care to see the fans in the crowd and also, I wish the camera weren't always so close up to Mariah. I would've liked to have seen more full shots of the stage with everything going on at once a few times throughout the presentation.) The background vocalists, in my opinion, were superb and they really did an amazing job. The dancers seemed to be quite talented, but at most times, the choreography was a little lame and unexciting to me. But to be completely honest, I don't really look to the dancers to give me thrills during a concert: my eyes are always on the star of the show.

Throughout the entire show, Mariah proves that she is back and here to stay. The voice, which some critics claimed was withering away to a mere whimper, is just as strong and bold as her early days. The high notes are still there, as is her soulful belting. And she really is singing live! She has astounding charisma and energy, and to top it all off, she looks better than ever.

Choosing the setlist must have been an extremely difficult task; Mariah has been active in the music business for the last 17 or 18 years. She has had many hit singles and also many great album tracks that have become fan favorites. Well, all I can say is that it was chosen perfectly. It has some stuff for all the new fans that she gained with this new album, but it is also faithful to the fans that have been there since day one. Most of her studio albums are represented with at least one song. All of the songs are pretty much performed in their entirety. (It really annoys me when artists do little one-and-a-half-minute versions of their songs, trying to cram everything in.) What I also liked was how she slipped in little pieces of some of her remixes into the performances. It was cool how she sang part of "Dream Lover" over the instrumental of Biggie's "Juicy." The powerful performance of "Fly Like A Bird" was worth the price of this set alone for me.

Aside from the concert, this also has some special features. The first disc has a behind-the-scenes feature, which are always fun to watch at least once. It also contains a jukebox feature that allows you to arrange and play your own setlist. (Mine: "Fly Like A Bird," ten times in a row.) I think the idea is quite ingenious. The second disc has a tour documentary, with interviews from all parties involved, speaking on the setlist, set design, dancers, etc. I always find these things interesting because it really takes an incredible amount of work to put a tour of this magnitude together, and it's always nice to hear Mariah speak. Also, a few, but not all, of the concert's songs are here in karaoke form so you can sing along. Last, a Spike-Lee directed short, Lovers and Haters, is included. It's Mariah's way of responding to--and laughing at--all the rumors that "haters" have created about her over the years. I don't really think this set needed to be two discs. I'm sure all the special features would've fit on one DVD, but I still enjoyed them all.

The Eagl
es - Hell Freezes Over

The music in the concert, filmed in April of 1994, is lovely and exquisitely performed, but somewhat underwhelming in its presentation.
The strength of the Eagles is in their wonderful songs and masterful musicianship, but anyone looking for a razzle-dazzle performance should look elsewhere; these are laid back performers to the point of sometimes being as exciting as watching a CD spin. It would have helped had they ditched the stools for the first 6 songs, varied the lighting a bit in the middle section, which is cast in an almost steady dark blue, and mixed in a few up-tempo songs, instead of the first 12 selections being of approximately the same speed and mood; it picks up with last 5 songs starting with "Take it Easy", with brighter lighting and more energy projected from the musicians, and even a rousing new song, "Get Over It".

Highlights for me are a gorgeous arrangement of my favorite Eagles song, "Hotel California", "New York Minute", with its Gershwinesque string section intro and jazzy horn solo, and "Life in the Fast Lane", one of the 3 up-tempo songs.
The first 15 minutes of this film are about the preparation for this concert, and include interviews with the Eagles who are: Glenn Frey / Don Henley / Joe Walsh / Don Felder / Timothy Schmit. The sound is great and total running time is 100 minutes.
Song list:
"Hotel California", "Tequila Sunrise", "Help Me Through the Night", "The Heart of the Matter"
"Love Will Keep Us Alive", "Learn to be Still", "Pretty Maids All on a Row", "The Girl from Yesterday", "Wasted Time", "I Can't Tell You Why", "New York Minute", "The Last Resort"
"Take it Easy", "Life in the Fast Lane", "In the City", "Get Over It", "Desperado"

Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I (World Tour 1992 in Tokyo)

The performances of "Nightrain","Mr. Brownstone",a cover of the Paul McCartney/Wings classic "Live and Let Die","Attitude"(a Misfits cover),and "Patience" are a little bit boring, but performances of songs like "It's So Easy","Welcome To The Jungle","Don't Cry","Double Talkin' Jive","Pretty Tied Up","November Rain",and "Civil War" are all really good good performances. Axl Rose shows off his talent as a showman during the performances of "It's So Easy" and "Civil War",and "Double Talkin' Jive" leading into "Civil War" sounds(as well as looks) just plain awesome. Don't expect the crowd in this DVD to keep up the excitement during performances of songs on here(some of which are on Guns N' Roses' "Live Era" record),and while this DVD would have been better if the crowd acted excited, the DVD itself is still alright. Don't expect to see "Sweet Child O' Mine","You Could Be Mine",etc. performed live, but a DVD that shows Guns N' Roses supporting UYI2 in Japan was also released,so buying that DVD along with this one would be a good supplement to this DVD(and both of them are sort of Guns N' Roses greatest hits--hits and fan favorites--live and in concert on a DVD). The best thing about this DVD is that even though the special feautures do pop up right after a performance of a song before you see the next song that is performed, you can go to the menu, click on the song selection, and then pick the performance of the song that comes up right after the performance of the last song you saw,and then you don't have all that much to complain about.

Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion II (World Tour 1992 in Tokyo)
The Guns N' Roses DVD that shows GN'R live in Tokyo in 1992,supporting their "Use Your Illusion II" record,is a great DVD,and it is even better than the UYI1 concert DVD. This is a transfer from an original VHS tape, the transfer doesn't look sloppy here, and the first time I saw this concert,it was even better than I thought it would be.

The DVD and the concert themselves? Both are not perfect, but both are very solid. After you get a behind the scenes look at Guns N' Roses backstage, the show opens with "You Could Be Mine",and this DVD shows GN'R performing songs off of AFD,Lies,UYI1,and UYI2,along with the theme from Francis Ford Coppala's hit film "The Godfather" and a drum solo from Matt Sorum,a guitar solo from Slash, and a timpani solo from Duff McKagan. Sorum's solo,Slash's solo, and McKagan's solo are all amazing,as well as GN'R's cover version of "The Godfather" theme. The audience in this DVD(same audience in the UYI1 concert DVD)actually act excited here and keep this concert/DVD exciting and entertaining, unlike the UYI1 concert DVD,which was good but didn't show a very enthusiastic audience.

The rest of this DVD(past "You Could Be Mine",the drum and guitar solo, and "The Godfather" theme)is pretty much a well planned supplemnet to the UYI1 concert DVD--this DVD/concert feautures live performances of songs that were NOT on the UYI1 concert DVD,and while you won't see "Welcome To The Jungle" or "November Rain" performed live here, you can get the UYI1 concert DVD for both of those things(you have to give the setlist on both the UYI1 concert DVD and the UYI2 concert DVD a lot of credit, since there is not overkill of live performances of AFD songs and since the DVDS have live performances of songs that one of the two DVDS didn't,as well as the fact that a DVD for a UYI1 concert and a UYI2 concert were both released). The jazzed up versions of Guns N' Roses' cover version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and the original GN'R tune "Move To The City" are both awesome and the highlights of this DVD,while Axl Rose and Duff McKagan do a nice duet of "So Fine",a jazz influenced song off of UYI2 that McKagan wrote as a tribute for Johnny Thunders. Even though drugs, alcohol, arrogance, and big egos had already been going on in Guns N' Roses for a while when the concert on this DVD was filmed, you can watch this concert and tell that everybody who was in GN'R(Axl,Slash,Duff,Matt,Dizzy Reed, and Gilby Clarke)when this concert was filmed were having a good time onstage.

As for the question of special feautures here, there are no bonus interviews,BUT,besides the one "bonus" thing I already mentioned at the top of this review,a Japanese TV interview with Slash that was conducted around the time this concert was shot do appear a couple of times,so you can't go wrong with either one of those things(if you don't want the
"bonus feautures" right before and/or during the concert on this DVD,you can go to the menu and select an actual song, unlike you could with the original VHS tape). An improvement from the original VHS tape of this concert.

If you are a die hard Guns N' Roses fan, this DVD is a must buy. If you are a new or casual GN'R fan, then you should become a die hard GN'R fan before you purchase this DVD,but what you have here is a great concert on a great DVD,and now hopefully a Guns N'Roses DVD from the AFD era and/or the Lies era will be released on DVD.

Engelbert Humperdinck: Greatest Performances
1967 - 1977
This is a very enjoyable DVD collection featuring some of Engelbert Humperdinck's biggest hits as he originally performed them in his TV show around 1969-1970. He was at the peak of his vocal power and he delivers the hits with fantastic intensity. The remastered sound with DTS is very good and it actually adds something extra, but the film at times shows the limitations of the era in which it was made. The songs are placed around a recent interview with Engelbert, in which he reflects the old times with a wink in his eye.

Too bad, though, that we don't get to see the TV shows in their entirety and out of Engelbert's extensive catalog only 12 songs are featured here. They are:

01: Release Me, 02: Last Waltz, 03: Man Without Love, 04: Am I That Easy To Forget
05: There Goes My Everything, 06: Les Bicyclettes De Belsize, 07: Quando Quando Quando
08: Winter World Of Love, 09: Spanish Eyes, 10: Love Me With All Of Your Heart
11: I'm A Better Man, 12: After The Lovin'

Roger Waters - The Wall (Live in Berlin)

The Wall (Live in Berlin) seemed uninspired and gimmicky in 1990 but looks and sounds terrifically compelling on DVD, thanks to its vivid image quality and greatly improved audio mixes. The freshly mineswept Potsdamer platz--a once-thriving plaza destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943--proved the perfect place to mark the opening of the Berlin Wall with an all-star production of Pink Floyd's magnum opus: a Wall for a wall. An unlikely assemblage of musicians augments Roger Waters's impressive house band (led by guitarist Rick DiFonzo and organ wizard Nick Glennie-Smith), with everyone from the Scorpions to Joni Mitchell to the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Army getting in on the rock-opera action. Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, James Galway, Thomas Dolby, and Albert Finney all turn in tasty cameos, while Sinead O'Connor looks unaccountably aloof in "Mother." The documentary is thorough and juicy, and producer Tony Hollingsworth offers an above-par essay in the booklet.

Lionel Richie: The Collection

I have not seen these videos since the late '80s - early '90s, and they really had me reminiscing. Looking over this collection, it was plain to see why Lionel Richie was the one of the hottest pop acts of the 1980s, where his only competition was Michael Jackson and Prince - good musical company to be in!! Even though today many people may dismiss Lionel's material as being too pop-oriented, I have yet to come across one person who can honestly say that they never brought any of his music!

This is like taking a trip through my late teens and early twenties all over again...I can remember all of these videos and being so moved by the "Hello" video, I had to cry. And I had the same reaction when I saw it again for the first time in God knows how many years!! The only videos I never really cared for were "Dancing On The Ceiling" (hey, I'm sorry!!) and "Penny Lover", but all the others are off the hook, especially "All Night Long" (where you see a young Lela Rochon-Fuqua dancing with Lionel), "Running With The Night" (this always reminded me of MJ's "Smooth Criminal" video), "Do It To Me" (I love this video...it is STEAMY, STEAMY, STEAMY!), "Se La" and "My Destiny". Also in the "Love, Oh Love" video, be on the lookout for a young Nicole Richie.

Overloaded: The Singles Collection

When the Sugababes released their first album in 2000, the group was made up of three singers : Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy. By the time they released their second, they had changed record labels (having being - bizarrely - dropped by London Records) and lost a member when Siobhan quit amid allegations of bullying. Heidi Range, an ex-Atomic Kitten, was promptly signed up as Siobhan's replacement and the new trio went on to clock up one hit after another. When Mutya left in 2006, Amelle Berrabah joined and "Overloaded" - the group's greatest hits collection - was released....just in time for Christmas.

Rather than working through the releases chronologically, it seems there's been an attempt to start with the best and work down to the worst. (At least, the DVD starts with my favourite track and finishes with the two I find a bit irritating). "Freak Like Me" is the DVD's opening track : like all the singles released from the first two albums, this is a great tune. It features a sample from Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric ?" and gave the Sugababes their UK first number one. The video is pretty striking and - although I may have been watching "Underworld" a bit too often recently - seems to have a slight vampire theme to it. The most striking video in the collection, though, is "Shape" - a very stylish and classy affair. The song itself is also excellent. As with "Freak Like Me", it was lifted from "Angels With Dirty Faces" and also features a sample - in this case, Sting's "Shape Of My Heart".

Ten of the fourteen tracks are provided by the Keisha-Mutya-Heidi line-up, while Siobhan and Amelle featuring on two tracks each. "Overload" (the group's debut single) and "Run for Cover" feature Siobhan - and, for me, are that bit better than the group's more recent singles. (In fairness, though, the recent singles are still much better than what most pop acts are capable of). Two other singles were released from the debut album, but were passed over for this collection. It's a pity, because they'd have been better choices than "Hole in the Head" and "Push the Button". (Apparently, an online poll saw "Push The Button" being voted the Sugababes best song to date. Good grief !)

Of the remaining tracks, "Red Dress" is a very good pop tune (though with a pretty lazy video) and "Too Lost In You" is a nice ballad-type number that also featured on the "Love Actually" soundtrack. (Like "Round Round" - which was used in "The Guru" - the version of the video that's included doesn't feature any clips of the film). I have mixed feelings about "Ugly", though : nice song, nice sentiment and a nice video. (In fact, the girls look REALLY good in it). However, it was written by Dallas Austin and it's almost like he just rehashed TLC's "Unpretty" - which he produced and co-wrote. It was also Mutya's last single as part of the group.

Overall, though, I would absolutely recommend "Overloaded". Sugababes have been one of the best pop acts in recent years and this DVD will be loved by teen pop fans and dads in equal measure.

Sultans of Swing

This is a great collection of Dire Straits' videos from the beginning ("Sultans of Swing"), to the end ("Heavy Fuel"). There are 13 videos presented here with three live "videos" taken from the "On Every Street" tour. The total running time is right at 90 minutes, and much of the material is rare, so it is wonderful to see all these on one DVD.

The videos are as follows:

"Sultans of Swing" - This is from the very early days of music video, and it shows. This is basically a staged version of the song. Mark looks so young in this video that it is almost startling.

"Lady Writer" - I found the "Puffy Shirt" from Seinfeld! Well, maybe not exactly, but you have got to see the shirt that poor Pick Withers has to endure back at the drum kit (it really does look like its "Puffy Shirt" namesake). Very lame production values from the late 1970s, once again.

"Romeo and Juliet" - This is the first Dire Strait's video that tells the story largely through actors performing the song as a narrative. Some interesting hairstyles are featured.

"Tunnel of Love" - This is a great early video, albeit featuring some very bad early 1980s clothes and hair.

"Private Investigations" - This is the only video that reveals that Mark is actually left handed if you watch for it. This one is well done, and is genuinely creepy, as per the song's subject matter: highly recommended.

"Twisting by the Pool" - From the EP of the same name, it is a comparatively rare track, and is up-tempo fun. It features film shot from the time of "Alchemy."

"Love Over Gold" - This one is a bit boring, but honestly it may be my bias: this is not one of my favorite Dire Straits' songs.

"So Far Away" - This is a very conventional and captivating video featuring a lot of studio footage from the band.

"Money For Nothing" - This is, of course, one of the most influential videos in history, introducing computer generated characters to videos. It didn't hurt that the song is the biggest hit ever by Dire Straits.

"Brothers in Arms" - This is an impeccably crafted and suitably somber video. It is incredibly well conceptualized and executed, particularly the "machine gun to guitar" edit introducing Mark's solo. It is the best Dire Straits video, hands down.

"Walk of Life" - Another great concept, this time illustrating the lighthearted side of the band with sports bloopers.

"Calling Elvis" - This is an interesting video of a relatively weak single from the early 1990s. It was very creative to use "Thunderbirds" marionettes that looked like the band in this one, a very cool concept.

"Heavy Fuel" - A video shot through the eyes of a roadie. It is very amusing and well done, and shows some interesting behind the scenes footage that fans will love.

The last three "videos" are from early 1990s concert footage, and consist of "On Every Street," "Your Latest Trick," and "Local Hero-Wild Theme," which is always a favorite of mine.

This is a great package and as a bonus features an audio interview with Mark Knopfler that is very interesting. I highly recommend this DVD to Dire Straits fans, just expect to laugh at the production values of the earliest videos: the band sure came a long way in fifteen years.

The Carpenters - Gold: Greatest Hits
Released in 2002, Carpenters "Gold" DVD is an exact replica of the 1985 Carpenter VHS release "Yesterday Once More". For those of you (like me) who already own the VHS version, I am sorry to say that "Gold" offers nothing new, no new tracks, no new visuals, no interviews, etc. Obviously, the DVD format is not utilized to it's full potential and with little creative imagination. Had there been a full menu on the DVD, plus some additional music videos, this would easily be a 5-star production. However, for those who have never seen the Carpenters perform, "Gold" will be a good introduction to the duo, and serves as an technology upgrade for those who previously bought "Yesterday Once More".

"Gold" comprises 15 "music videos" of some of the Carpenters' more popular hits. Please be aware that the term "music video" has taken on a whole different meaning (due to MTV), compared to when the Carpenters performed their songs. Instead of creative visual pictures and themes, the "Gold" visuals of the Carpenters is mostly standard fare, with Karen out front singing before the Carpenter band. A few songs are filmed on location; such as "Please Mister Postman" at Disneyworld, and "Ticket To Ride" in the snowy mountains of Aspen. The songs span the entire breadth of the careers of Karen and Richard Capenter, from "We've Only Just Begun" featuring a very youthful Karen Carpenter, to "Those Good Old Dreams", with a much more mature Richard and a painfully thin Karen.

The sound quality of the songs is excellent, as these songs are taken directly from their albums, with Karen and Richard lip-synching to the recording. The lip-synching is done so well that in most cases one would swear they are actually singing live. Karen's characteristic rich lovely voice is flawless.

ABBA: The Definitive Collection
Two decades after they last recorded together, ABBA remain as one of the most popular music acts of all time. Hits like Waterloo, SOS, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me, The Winner Takes It All, and Super Trouper are as loved today as they were when the four Swedes ruled the charts worldwide.

But for all the brilliance of their music, ABBA are remembered as much for their glittery costumes and general 1970s appearance--and perhaps this part of their legacy was never better exposed than in their groundbreaking music videos. Made at a time when MTV didn't exist and very few artists produced "promo clips"--as they were known at the time--ABBA have been hailed as pioneers in this field. Most of the videos were made by award-winning director Lasse Hallstrom, who today is well-known for movies such as My Life as a Dog, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and The Cider House Rules.

The Definitive Collection features every official ABBA video in one package for the first time, including three Spanish clips that have never been commercially released before. Two additional bonus selections from ABBA's television appearances have also been included: When I Kissed the Teacher, and a performance of Dancing Queen at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. All clips have been digitally remastered from the original negatives and synchronized with 24-bit remastered sound, making them look and sound better than ever before.

The Definitive Collection is an amazing journey through ABBA's string of hits, and a wonderful celebration of their timeless appeal. Sit back and enjoy!

Videos: Waterloo, Ring Ring, Mamma Mia, SOS, Bang-a-Boomerang, I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Money Money Money, Knowing Me Knowing You, That's Me, The Name of the Game, Take a Chance on Me, Eagle, One Man One Woman, Thank You for the Music, Summer Night City, Chiquitita, Does Your Mother Know, Voulez-Vous, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight), On and On and On, The Winner Takes It All, Super Trouper, Happy New Year, When All Is Said and Done, One of Us, Head Over Heels, The Day Before You Came, Under Attack. Bonus tracks: When I Kissed the Teacher, Estoy Sonando (I Have a Dream), Felicidad (Happy New Year), No Hay a Quien Culpar (When All Is Said and Done), Dancing Queen (at the Royal Swedish Opera). 136 minutes.

ABBA: Number Ones
ABBA: Number Ones" showcases all of the songs that topped the charts internationally. The DVD includes all the videos to these classic songs and as a bonus, they throw in a live version of "Waterloo", 2 other live performances (which were sung to a backing track) and a Number One scrapbook which lists all the countries the respective singles topped the charts in. Evidence of ABBA's overwhelming international appeal is that if you were to tally up all of their number ones, you would get a number well over 100. What's even more impressive is that not all of the countries they scored a number 1 hit in are listed. For instance, not all the countries "Dancing Queen" reached the top in are included. Also the Spanish version of "Chiquitita" reached the top of the charts in several countries in South America including my native Chile and none are listed on the scrapbook and according to statistics "Waterloo" topped the charts in 14 countries but only 9 are listed on the DVD. Also missing in action is "Does Your Mother Know" which reached # 1 in Belgium and the Top Ten in several other territories including Canada, "Eagle" which topped the charts in Belgium and "Lay All Your Love on Me" which was a top ten hit in the UK and reached # 1 in the US Hot Dance Club Play Charts in the early 80's.

ABBA's success in North America paled slightly to their massive appeal elsewhere however to state they were not successful in the US and Canada will be an inaccurate statement. In the US, the group had 20 singles reach the Billboard Hot 100 within an 8 year time frame out of which 14 reached the Top 40. They also scored a # 1 hit on the singles chart with "Dancing Queen" (featured here), two # 1 hits in the Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts with "Fernando" and "The Winner Takes It All" (featured here) and a # 1 in the Billboard Dance/Club charts with "Lay All Your Love on Me" (not featured here). In Canada they scored no less than 14 Top Forty hits out of which 8 reached the Top Ten and 6 consecutive Top Ten albums including a # 1 with Greatest Hit: Vol 2.

Sting - Inside - The Songs of Sacred Love
Sting Inside" has incredible music. The duet with Mary J. Blige is enough reason for me to want this DVD, although several of the songs are worthwhile. "The Book Of My Life" has an unusual style and rhythm that I especially enjoyed. The title song, "Inside", is very moving.

"Sting Inside" has 15 songs and a bonus track, "Every Breath You Take". "The Shape Of My Heart" is a two minute snippet of Dominic and Sting in Malibu. I don't count it as a song, even though I enjoyed it immensely. "Every Breath You Take" is recorded in Malibu during rehearsal and is the full length song. The other 15 songs are shown played in concert at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles. The video quality of the concert is tremendous, very clear. The video quality of the interviews is a little softer, but still very good. I found the audio quality to be excellent. The default setting is 2.0. You have to go into the setup menu to get Dolby Digital 5.1, which I find a little annoying. There is little direct access to songs through the track numbers. Here is a song listing by track number:

Track Number / Songs
1) Send Your Love
2) Inside
3) Dead Man's Rope
4) Shape of My Heart / Never Coming Home
5) Like A Beautiful Smile
6) Forget About The Future / That Sinking Feeling
7) This War
8) Stolen Car (Take Me Dancing) / All Would Envy
9) Sacred Love
10) The Book Of My Life
11) Walking On The Moon
12) Roxanne
13) Whenever I Say Your Name

Extras: Every Breath You Take; Commentary

In this concert, Sting uses percussion and programmed drums. I don't have strong feelings about that. I think it fits what he's trying to do with the music. I was curious to hear what Sting said about drummers, based on another review. Here it is part of it, taken out of context:

"Not having a drummer allows colors to emerge that the sonic range of drums tend (sic) to obliterate. I love drummers, I like loud, rock n'roll music, but in the rehearsal period, that's all you hear. The acid test for whether a song is a good song or not is whether you can break it down into a simple rendition. If it still works like that, it's a good song, as far as I'm concerned. It's a very good transition stage between the recording, the big show with the drummer."

For me, "Sting Inside" did not create the feeling of actually being at the concert. There are interviews (sometimes several minutes long) between every track until "Walking on the Moon". The very end of one of my favorite songs, "Inside", was cut off when the DVD went to the next track. These contributed to a choppy feeling at times. I prefer to have the option to just watch the concert. I watch music DVD's over and over again. I will get tired of hearing Sting talk about finding lyrics under a rock. I'm tempted to take away a star because of it, but I'd have to give it back based on the great price.

I like the "All This Time" DVD because I felt that I got a glimpse of Sting the person. In "Sting Inside", I think Sting took even more of a risk in letting the world see him as a person. I say "risk", because I see enough of Sting to decide if I like him or not. For some people, this may color whether they like the music. I recommend "Sting Inside" for anyone who wants to see more of what goes on behind the scenes and "inside" Sting, and also for the great music.
