Alice In Wonderland In Theaters This Week 5th March 2010

Hoping for the biggest opening of his career, Tim Burton directs the 3D update on a classic fairy tale with Alice in Wonderland which finds the title character returning to her fantasy world years later as a young woman being pushed into adulthood. The colorful film has been rated PG for, among other things, "a smoking caterpillar" and features Johnny Depp in classic kooky mode as the Mad Hatter. Also starring with their bodies are Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Mia Wasikowska while lending their voices are Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, and Sir Christopher Lee.

Alice should appeal to most of the same folks that came out nearly five years ago for the Burton/Depp concoction Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which was also a new update on an old story with a PG rating. That film bowed in July of 2005 when all kids were out of school to $56.2M on its way to a $206.5M final. Alice will have to deal with a release during the school year, but higher 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D ticket prices will help it to debut even higher. The director and actor remain wildly popular and this is exactly the type of film audiences will pay top dollar for, at least in the short run. Disney has pumped tons of cash into an extensive marketing campaign which has been effective as excitement and awareness are both quite high. Alice will skew more female, but young boys will also take interest.

From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure "Alice in Wonderland," a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen's reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Crispin Glover; Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay. Capturing the wonder of Lewis Carroll's beloved "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) and "Through the Looking-Glass" (1871) with stunning, avant-garde visuals and the most charismatic characters in literary history, "Alice in Wonderland" comes to the big screen in Disney Digital 3D™ on March 5, 2010
