Batman breaks Spider-Man record at box office

Two words to describe 'The Dark Knight'; F@#%$&* Awesome!!. Move over Ironman, Hulk, Hellboy...there's a new hero in town. Christopher Nolan's brilliant masterpiece is totally rocks, this is how Batman movies should be made. Darker plot, an edge of your seat thrills and suspense added by cutting edge mind blowing special effects and jaw dropping action [Kapow!! - Gotham City was actually shot in Chicago]. A big thanks to Heath Ledger as the anarchic Joker for his outstanding and impressive performance [if I'm with the Academy Awards, I'll be giving him the 'Best Supporting Role Award' though], best villain ever for 2008. He really brings the character alive. For me I'm going to watch it the second time. Fantastic! This movie is too perfect. - Ibrahem.S

The eagerly awaited new Batman film The Dark Knight broke the all-time opening weekend box office record and drove the overall North American marketplace to the largest frame in history with moviegoers dumping over $250M into theater cash registers over three days. The new musical Mamma Mia! managed to connect with its non-superhero fan base and posted a strong opening of its own in Knight's shadow while the animated comedy Space Chimps debuted to mild numbers. After back-to-back weekends when ticket sales were softer than last year's, the box office soared to heights never before seen.

Records fell this weekend thanks to sky high demand to see the latest Caped Crusader vehicle The Dark Knight which hauled in a jaw-dropping $155.3M over the Friday-to-Sunday period to set a new industry benchmark. Averaging a stunning $35,579 from 4,366 theaters, the PG-13 comic book flick edged past the previous opening weekend record of $151.1M held by another superhero sequel Spider-Man 3 from the first weekend of May last year. The Peter Parker pic even had more total screens with roughly 10,000 which was about 800 more than Knight's tally. Batman's gross included $18.5M from Thursday night shows between midnight and 3am which also set a record beating the $16.9M of 2005's Star Wars Episode III. Critics piled on praise for the $180M-budgeted Dark Knight which scored some of the best reviews of the year.

The new Batman film reunited director Christopher Nolan and actor Christian Bale who successfully rebooted the franchise with 2005's Batman Begins after the series was left for dead after 1997's disastrous Batman & Robin starring George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Begins opened on a Wednesday in mid-June with $48.7M over three days and $72.9M over its five-day opening period leading to a solid $205.3M domestic final. The Dark Knight will surpass that mark in under a week's time. Veteran character actors Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman also returned while Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Heath Ledger joined the cast. Ledger's acclaimed performance as The Joker became a magnet attracting millions of comic and action fans and his accidental death in January only heightened the curiosity factor making the must-see film of 2008.

The Dark Knight blew open the bank vault door on Friday and made off with an eye-popping $67.9M (including Thursday night midnight sales) smashing the records for best opening day and best single day gross ever. Both of those marks were held by Spider-Man 3 with $59.8M. Sales fell sharply on Saturday by 29% to $48M, still an amazing haul, and Warner Bros. is estimating that Sunday's gross will slip by only 18% and come in at $39.5M. Knight's Saturday and Sunday tallies were the second best ever. The Spidey threequel can still claim those records with $51.3M and $39.9M, respectively. Rival studios on Sunday projected a three-day tally between $151-153M. Final numbers will be released on Monday.

Also adding excitement to the film's release was the fact that Dark Knight was the first regular movie to use IMAX cameras during filming. Six action sequences were shot with the heavy-duty equipment allowing those who see the film in IMAX theaters a greater entertainment experience. This helped Knight set a new record for biggest IMAX opening with $6.2M from 94 venues this weekend for a scorching $66,000 average. Ticket prices are also higher for the large screen format.

After just three days of release, The Dark Knight is already the sixth biggest blockbuster of the summer and is virtually guaranteed to swipe the 2008 box office crown away from Iron Man in the coming weeks. With all students out of school in July, midweek grosses will be much stronger than in early May when the metal man and the last webslinger pic debuted.

This weekend's achievement was nothing new for the Caped Crusader. In fact, Dark Knight is the fourth Batman film to break the all-time opening weekend record. The first Batman did the deed in 1989 with its $42.7M bow at a time when no film had ever debuted to $30M, much less $40M, over a three-day weekend. That record stayed for three years and was broken in 1992 by Batman Returns which bowed to $47.7M. Jurassic Park would swipe the record the following summer but Batman Forever took the title back with its $52.8M launch in 1995. All three Batman films opened in mid-June.

Warner Bros. did not opt for a global attack with The Dark Knight, but it did release the superhero pic in 20 markets this weekend and grossed an estimated $40M from 4,500 international screens led by Australia's $13.1M over five days. Many European markets open this coming weekend including Italy and the United Kingdom while Asia's top markets Japan and Korea will launch in early August.

Led by the staggering sales for the new Batman-Joker feud, the overall box office soared to more than $255M in ticket sales making it the best weekend in movie history. The previous high was $218.4M over the July 7-9, 2006 frame when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest bowed to a then-record $135.6M. Studios are hoping that the roughly 36 million moviegoers who saw trailers and posters at multiplexes this weekend will keep coming back in the weeks ahead for more summer films. Dark Knight In Theaters This Week 17 July

The wait is over! 'The Dark Knight' most anticipated sequel to 'Batman Begins' finally makes it debut today with my expectations it would break the USD$100million barrier as the box office weekend champion this week. Christopher Nolan the director of 'The Dark Knight' - I've sensed his talent which I can said 'totally awesome', fresh ideas, gripping and intensely made when his film 'Memento' was shown back in the year 2000, all the critics giving 'two thumbs up' for it. Even in 'Batman Begins' and 'The Prestige', his work is totally outstanding and very classy. Adding on the flame for the audiences to flock in to cinemas worldwide this week is the undeniable 'Heath Ledger' for his potrayal as 'The Joker', other star power includes: Aaron Echart, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Maggie Gylenhaal and Gary Oldman. Christian Bale with director Christopher Nolan, the pair seen by many as making the best Caped Crusader film ever with 2005's 'Batman Begins' will bring 'The Dark Knight' into the newest height hope to beat the record debut of Sony Pictures Entertainment's "Spider-Man 3" in 2007, which reached $151 million. Sony Pictures is part of Japanese electronics company Sony Corp.
Mama Mia! The new musical drama from Universal Pictures will also opens this week. Abba fans heads up ok, hits including "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Winner Takes It All" are all on the movie. With star power of Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, this movie is going to do well [haha..since last year musical of 'Hairspray' which stars John Travolta can also easily hit USD$100million].
My predictions this weekend 1) The Dark Knight USD$105million 2) Mama Mia USD$35million - Ibrahem.S

Batman Mania Week

Grab all these collectible Batman Blu-ray discs now!!

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Batmania hit the video sales charts ahead of Friday's release of "The Dark Knight."

Two titles with plots linked to the sequel -- the animated direct-to-video title "Batman: Gotham Knight" and the most recent theatrical installment in the franchise, "Batman Begins" -- took the top two spots on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ended July 13.

The two Batman titles also topped the Blu-ray Disc chart for the week, but in reverse order.

"Vantage Point," last week's top seller and renter, repeated as the week's No. 1 rental, according to Home Media Magazine. It fell to No. 3 on the sales chart. "Drillbit Taylor" was No. 2 on the rental chart for a second week.

Newcomers "The Ruins" and "Stop-Loss" took the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively, on the rental chart. The box office weaklings finished at No. 4 and No. 9, respectively, on the sales chart. [Source from: Reuters/Hollywood Reporter]

'High School Musical 3' trailer hits the web! GAME ON!

The trailer for High School Musical 3: Senior Year hit the web today, and dear lord if I didn't squeal like a little girl at a Jonas Brothers concert. Or maybe just like a Jonas brother. I'll tell you exactly the moment the hairs on my arm stood on end: when gorgeous Gabriella stood up in the stands inside the Wildcats gym, time stopping and spotlight illuminating her white dress to megawatt angelic radiance, and sang to her sweetie Troy, anime manboy incarnate (he so could have been Speed Racer), working so very, very hard on the basketball court -- and he sang back!

TROY: "Right now I can hardly breath!"
GABRIELLA: "I know you can do it just know that I believe!"
TROY: "And that's all I really need!"
GABRIELLA: "Then come on!"
TROY: "Make me strong! It's time to turn it up, GAME ON!"
(Actual lyrics. Dead serious)

I'm telling you: it's gonna be the tweenybopper Harry Potter 7! A whole cultural phenomenon comes to a glorious, hyperpoppy climax on Oct 24. I am weeping! I am hysterical! I AM SO IN THE FRONT OF THIS LINE WHEN IT COMES OUT, and it can't get here soon enough. What time is it? How about right frakking NOW, dammit! GAME ON! [Source from: ew.com]

Director was "nervous" mounting Batman film sequel

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When Chris Nolan took on the job of directing "The Dark Knight," the highly anticipated sequel to his 2005 box office smash "Batman Begins," he knew what he was getting into. After all, he'd done it before.

Still, British director Nolan admitted to being "nervous" when he set about making another Batman movie because he knew "The Dark Knight," which debuts in U.S. theaters on Friday, needed to take audiences to places they hadn't been in "Batman Begins," which raked in $372 million at global box offices.

Making a crowd-pleasing Batman film is even more difficult because the comic book icon has been immortalized in TV and movies many times before, including the film series that began with 1989's "Batman" and ended with 1997's critically panned "Batman & Robin," which just about killed off the franchise until Nolan came along with "Batman Begins."

"There are very, very few good sequels, I think," he said. "The two I always had in mind, that we were aspiring to be, were "The Godfather II" and "The Empire Strikes Back," the 1980 follow-up to the first, smash hit "Star Wars" movie.

"Other than those, (good sequels) are pretty thin on the ground," he added.

Fortunately for Nolan and the Warner Bros. movie studio, it appears he may have landed on terra firma with "Dark Knight," which has earned strong early reviews in part due to the performance of Heath Ledger as Batman's nemesis, the Joker.

Nolan said the trick to making a good sequel is staying true to the tone of the original film, but at the same time offering audiences something fresh and exciting.

"For instance, right from the start, I wanted this growing feeling about Batman -- that what he's doing isn't working and it's being misinterpreted by the people of Gotham," he said. "I also wanted to make it more expansive and just push it further in all directions.

In "Batman Begins," Nolan successfully restarted the

"Batman" franchise by giving the movie a dark and ominous tone, and hiring Christian Bale to play a man conflicted about his life as playboy millionaire Bruce Wayne, who eventually becomes crime-fighting superhero Batman.

The first film deals with Batman establishing himself as an extraordinary presence in his home town of Gotham City. "Dark Knight" has him dealing with the criminals' response.

The anarchic Joker intimidates politicians, the police, the public and even the Mob, as he carefully orchestrates a series of murders, kidnappings and bombings to bring Gotham to its knees. Only Batman seems capable of halting his rampage.

"I always felt that Batman was based on the idea of taking very negative, dark motivations and energy, and trying to do something positive with it," Nolan said. "He's clearly wrestling with all that. And you need a great actor to be able to express all that, and Christian is so good as Batman."

Bale returns as does Michael Caine as Alfred the butler, but Nolan shook up other key roles. Katie Holmes is out as Rachel Dawes (Wayne's love interest), replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Aaron Eckhart arrives as a new District Attorney.

The boldest step was casting Ledger, perhaps best known for his Oscar-nominated role as an introverted gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," as the flamboyant and manic Joker.

Nolan said Ledger, who died this year of an accidental drug overdose, plays the Joker as "someone completely devoted to chaos," yet he is still "human enough to be frightening because if he's not human, you won't believe in him."His initial concerns seem to be have been unfounded, since most "Dark Knight" reviews have been positive. Richard Corliss of Time Magazine, for example, said it is "bound to haunt you long after you've told yourself, 'Aah, it's only a comic book movie.' Dark Knight Premiere

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Warner Bros. took the wraps off what is arguably its biggest movie of the year Monday, unveiling "The Dark Knight" in a splashy Manhattan premiere.

The event -- which shut down a block of Broadway as media and gawkers crowded a busily trafficked street to glimpse the likes of Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman -- featured an opening performance that was as much sound-and-light show as premiere. Composers James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer played a piece of the score accompanied by an elaborate lighting number with a Bat Signal as its centerpiece.

The Imax screening was the first large-scale presentation of the film, which the studio will roll out to a screening-packed schedule this weekend.

But for all the pyrotechnics, the event also had another potential purpose: as a quiet, backdoor test of the movie's awards potential, especially for Heath Ledger and his performance as arch villain the Joker.

Studio executives, who congregated with a kind of nervous energy in the top-floor lobby of the Sony Lincoln Square, may have gotten what they had hoped for: There were several small midscreening ovations for the late actor.

The screening reaction of both the media and the industry proved not just a test of the movie's drawing power -- it's already expected to challenge for the biggest opening in history -- but whether it could gain traction as an awards contender. Big summer movies generally have been passed over by the Academy for all but technical awards for the past several years.

In some ways the event resembled another Warners premiere of several years ago: the debut of Martin Scorsese's "The Departed." Like "Knight," the movie also had a buzzy New York premiere that was meant as a precursor to a big opening but which quietly set the stage for a successful awards run.

The mainly insider audience also provided some focus-group info of sorts when it murmured excitedly at the first of many Imax-enhanced overhead shots. [Source from: Reuters/Hollywood Reporter]

Shutter (Blu-ray)

Fox Home Entertainment / 2008 / Unrated
Street Date: July 15, 2008

Genres: Suspense thriller, Horror

Starring: Joshua Jackson, Rachael Taylor

Plot Synopsis: Based on a 2004 Thai horror flick, this surprisingly effective Hollywood remake is actually set in Tokyo. That's where newlywed hubby Joshua Jackson has taken bride Rachael Taylor (Transformers) for an ill-advised honeymoon. They hit a woman standing in the middle of a spooky road, after which all sorts of ghosts seem to emerge from Jackson's camera (he's come to Japan for a fashion-photography gig). Can our plucky heroine, a fish out of water in a confusing city, find the answer to this haunted puzzle? Well, yes, but she won't like what she finds. Shutter is distinguished by director Mayasuki Ochiai's compositional eye, which favors the empty, creeped-out spaces in which ghosts might dwell. The movie also gets into the phenomenon of "spirit photography," which suggests that the dear departed make their presence known as white flashes in snapshots. That stuff's kind of fun; unfortunately, Ochiai's ear for dialogue is as clunky as his eye is sharp, and Jackson and Taylor are saddled with some truly unfortunate exposition. The actors don't leave much of an impression either, although Megumi Okina (leading lady of Ju-on: The Grudge) is sufficiently spooky as a woman who will not be ignored. - [Amazon.com]

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Blu-ray)

Warner Home Entertainment / 1975 / 133 Minutes / Rated R
Street Date: July 15, 2008

Genres: Drama, Thriller

Starring: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, William Redfield
Director: Milos Forman

Plot Synopsis: One of the key movies of the 1970s, when exciting, groundbreaking, personal films were still being made in Hollywood, Milos Forman's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest emphasized the humanistic story at the heart of Ken Kesey's more hallucinogenic novel. Jack Nicholson was born to play the part of Randle Patrick McMurphy, the rebellious inmate of a psychiatric hospital who fights back against the authorities' cold attitudes of institutional superiority, as personified by Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). It's the classic antiestablishment tale of one man asserting his individuality in the face of a repressive, conformist system--and it works on every level. Forman populates his film with memorably eccentric faces, and gets such freshly detailed and spontaneous work from his ensemble that the picture sometimes feels like a documentary. Unlike a lot of films pitched at the "youth culture" of the 1970s, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest really hasn't dated a bit, because the qualities of human nature that Forman captures--playfulness, courage, inspiration, pride, stubbornness--are universal and timeless. The film swept the Academy Awards for 1976, winning in all the major categories (picture, director, actor, actress, screenplay) for the first time since Frank Capra's It Happened One Night in 1931. - [Amazon.com]

Disc Features:
  • Audio Commentary - Director Milos Forman and producers Saul Zaentz and Michael Douglas join in for a strong track. There is considerably more detail here than in the still-fine documentary (see below), particularly many on-set stories involving Jack Nicholson and the cast, as well as the contributions of key creative personnel, including composer Jack Nitzsche. Also delved into at length are the book's still-timely themes (particularly fascinating are Forman's comments on being a foreigner adapting a rather American story), as well as compressions and alterations that needed to be made in adapting Ken Kesey's book. This is an excellent commentary.

  • Documentary: "The Making of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'" (SD, 47 minutes) - Though edited down from a similar documentary made for a long out-of-print laserdisc release of 'Cuckoo's Nest,' this is still a fine piece. Forman, Zaentz, and both Michael and Kirk Douglas all contribute then-fresh interviews, as do select cast and crew. It's a nod to this doc that even without Jack Nicholson (bummer!) it's informative, particularly the details of an early stage version that the elder Douglas brought to the screen, as well as the actors' recollections of the shoot. There is also a nice wrap-up detailing the film's surprise success and awards windfall. A very nice (if somewhat dated) doc.

  • Deleted Scenes (SD, 19 minutes) - There are eight scenes in all, and here is the rare collection of snipped footage that is actually as strong as anything in the film. None of these scenes are essential, but all stand tall on their own -- particularly some disturbing material involving further hospital experiments done on McMurphy and the other patients. For once, we have deleted scenes worth watching.

  • Theatrical Trailer (SD) - Also included is the film's theatrical trailer in mediocre-quality video.

  • Collectible Booklet - Finally, Warner wraps it all up in "Digi-Book" packaging that includes a nice 32-page, full color booklet. There are some brief production notes, cast bios, many rare photographs, and a well-written (if uncredited) essay on the film's importance.
